New cart on the block: Gourmet dogs in Dumbo

Posted in Eat Out by Gabriella Gershenson on August 5th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Say hello to the latest highbrow dog to hit the New York streets: Last weekend saw the debut of the Landing at Fulton Ferry, an old-style hot-dog cart with a contemporary fixation on details. The cart: It’s got oak wheels and handles. The dogs: There are just four combos, but they’re striving for cred. Try the Chicago Dog, with a Vienna beef frank and poppy-seed bun; the Berlin Currywurst, with Karl Ehmer sausage and a homemade tomato curry sauce; or the Brooklyn Bridge dog, a classic combo of kraut, red onions and yellow mustard. Owner Richard Mauro, a silent partner in the nearby Japanese restaurant Miso, says he’s doing this for love. "It’s not just selling hot dogs," he says. "I’m having a good time." Catch him across from Grimaldi’s from noon to midnight, Thursday through Saturday. Bring your appetite.

Wow, I hit this up tonight, let me tell you, this is the real deal. I got the Berlin Currywurst and was blown away. The home made curry sauce is fantastic.

It is such a casual spot, Christmas lights up around the entrance and people sitting around with huge smiles on their faces.

I think this place is an instant classic and the owner doesn’t even know it yet.

I’ll be back for the Texas chili dog.

Thanks for the tip Time Out!
