We’re all for successful out-of-town chefs having a go in New York, so we were happy to see Bryan Emperor—the talented toque behind TEN in Charlottesville, Virginia—show up on our Fall Preview radar But we worried that the transplant might be stretching himself too thin, with two simultaneous projects in the works—the yakitori-focused Mr. Jones and the “Japanese paella” joint, Kamameshi, both in the East Village. (NB to aspiring absentee chefs: Integral upstarts should be tied to the ship, at least until the reviews start rolling in.)
What a relief then, to hear that Kamameshi, for now anyway, is a no-go. But lest the head-scratching stop there, we have word on its replacement—an eatery called “Permanent Brunch” helmed by the normally levelheaded Colin Alevras (also signed on to cook at La Otra, a block away). That’s brunch, friends. All day, every day.
What? Egg was already taken?
