Exclusive: NYC ICY opens in Brooklyn, coming soon to Hell’s Kitchen

Posted in Eat Out by Gabriella Gershenson on June 16th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

This just in: Suzie Leeds, one of the elusive owners of dearly departed ice joint to end all ice joints, NYC ICY, dropped a line to TONY delivering this scoop (pun unintended, but well-placed, no?): NYC ICY is opening this Wednesday (pending a Health Department visit) at its long-vacant storefront on 628 Tenth Avenue between 44th and 45th Streets. But wait, there’s more! While icy groupies were salivating over the impending Manhattan comeback, Leeds and her husband quietly opened a much bigger location in Brooklyn’s Kensington neighborhood on 905 Church Avenue between Coney Island Avenue and East 10th Street last week. (That’s the F train to Church Ave, for the outer-borough challenged.)

Said the charmingly modest Leeds, "Business is slow because we’re in the middle of nowhere, but we have regulars already and it’s only been a week!" In addition to established favorites like apricot-ginger and classic lemon, there are new (and can we say, ridiculously good-sounding) flavors such as wild strawberries and cream (the berries, like the icy-making equipment, are imported from Italy), banana and dairy-free grape made from fresh Concords. There’s another bonus: Both locations will be open year-round. Making up for lost time? Whatever the reason: Welcome back, NYC ICY!

I’ll believe it when I see it. They’ve been promising to open since FEBRUARY 2007.

Referring to our neighborhood as the middle of nowhere is no way to endear yourselves to the locals.

I’ve already been to the Hell’s Kitchen location - welcome back to NYC!!! We’ve missed you since you left the East village.

And the flavors are as delicious as ever…. what a perfect summer gift!
