Readers who know me from back in the day might remember this article I wrote for the New York Press in 2005, lamenting the loss of my favorite frozen-sweets game in town, NYC ICY. This was long before the era of Pinkberry and /eks/, though I must admit I’ve developed a weakness for plain Red Mango with mochi topping (a close reader might noticed that I’ve switched allegiances—mea culpa). But it seems that, after years of speculation, the slushie to end all slushies may be returning this summer at 628 Tenth Avenue. Though we have no confirmed information yet, this shiny new storefront, from a photo taken this morning, speaks volumes. A peek through a tear in the paper that covers the windows revealed a fairly clean interior and a counter, presumably where the scoopage will be served. Since it’s comfortably close to the TONY offices, I might make it a daily habit of strolling by for a Dixie cup of its immaculate apricot-ginger—I still can’t get that flavor out of my head—or the hazelnut–chocolate chip. There’s nothing like making up for lost time.
