Dressing your little ones in cute, stylish clothing without breaking the bank can be a challenge—especially in this city. That’s why, this past spring, we presented a guide to the best children’s discount stores, consignment and resale shops, thrift spots and retails chains around the city. We’re so happy to report that Shop Lucky Finds, one of the kids’ resale shopping events we highlighted, is hosting an event this Saturday, November 21 from noon to 4pm at St. Jean Baptiste Community Center on the Upper East Side. Stock up on used clothing, toys and gear from companies such as Jacadi, Catamini, Petit Bateau, Baby Bjorn and Skip Hop at super-low prices. In addition, nine vendors will set up shop to sell their new goods at sample sale prices. Keep an eye out for gloves by Bear Hands, clothing from Pink Chicken, belts from Rockin Robin and headbands from Mikayla’s Creations. Bonus for those with babies: strollers are welcome!
Independent book shops can’t get enough attention as far as we’re concerned. Show them some love at the city’s first Indie Bookstore Week, which begins Sunday, November 15 and runs through Saturday, November 21. There are plenty of children’s events; highlights include: Brooklynites Randall and Peter de Sève present their picture-book collaboration The Duchess of Whimsy at Greenpoint’s Word (Sunday, November 15 at 2pm) and grilled cheese—a key plot point in the story—will be served; arts-and-crafts time at Dumbo’s powerHouse Arena with Alex Beard, author-illustrator of The Jungle Grapevine (Sunday, November 15th at 4pm); and a Bank Street Bookstore reading by Thad Krasnesky (Wednesday, November 18 at 4:30pm), author of a book about a power-tripping three-year-old called I Always, ALWAYS Get My Way. Bet that sentiment sounds familiar.
We can’t get over how adorable the goods are at new Red Hook emporium Foxy & Winston. Owner Jane Buck, who named the store after her parents, hand-screenprints her whimsical designs—everything from a rooster to a lady bug—on baby hats, onesies, bibs, tote bags, stationery and more.

If you’ve got fistfuls of Halloween candy lying around, the thoughtful folks at Tribeca kiddie store Babylicious will be happy to take the tempting morsels off your kids’ sticky hands. Inspired by the deal owner Carol Adams makes with her own kids—keep ten pieces of trick-or-treat candy and trade in the rest for a new toy—the shop will give you a ten percent discount off your next purchase in exchange for your unopened Halloween loot. All the tasty donations will go to the Harlem Food Bank, which will distribute the goodies at Thanksgiving. The offer’s good through November 15 (as if the candy will last that long in your apartment!); we suggest making the most of your visit by stopping in on Tues, Nov 12 for storytime.
A number of the shops we profile in Time Out Kids sell onesies and booties from Egg by Susan Lazar, so we were excited to hear that the company opened up its very own retail shop in Dumbo. The boutique carries baby and toddler clothing and accessories, maternity gear, organic crib bedding, diaper bags and more. The line is also especially popular with celeb parents—Jennifer Garner’s daughter Seraphina was photographed in an Egg hat and Katherine Heigl’s daughter Naleigh was caught wearing a striped dress from the line. The store will host workshops such as prenatal nutrition for parents and parents-to-be.
With the amount of
new children’s stores popping up in New York City over the past few weeks, it feels like the recession is coming to an end! The latest: Brooklyn Junior in Clinton Hill. Artist and owner Nadia Georgiou—who has been selling her colorful children’s clothing online and at Brooklyn Flea—has finally opened a permanent space. Some of Georgiou’s most popular designs include brightly-colored kimonos and silkscreened T-shirts with images of fire hydrants and headphones.

We’ve been fans of Crewcuts—J.Crew’s line for little prepsters—for years, so we were excited to hear that the company recently opened a flagship location on the Upper East Side. Besides carrying the full collection for boys and girls, the 2,200-square-foot space will host art installations, sell wooden toys from Kid O and offer private shopping appointments. We recently spoke to Jenny Cooper, the company’s head children’s designer, about some of the store’s coolest elements, which styles will be popular for fall and how her young sons, Walker, 7, and Miller, 5, feel about fashion.
Tell us about the new location. How is it different from other Crewcuts outposts?
Well, we really tried to make the store an exciting experience for both kids and parents. We have drawers of Schleich animals for little hands to rummage through while Mom and Dad shop. We’ve also added whimsical touches to our dressing rooms. One is covered with telephones that play unexpected sounds—like a rocket ship taking off or a bird singing—when you pick them up.
As the head children’s designer, how do you decide what goes into the lines?
We want our kids to look intelligent and chic—like they know what’s going on! For boys, this fall we’re loving skinny jeans paired with vintage-inspired T-shirts. For girls, we’re really excited about our knit skinny pants and our fancy dresses, especially the spotted swing one with chiffon flowers on the front.
