Seventh Generation, a company that produces green household products, is hosting this event meant to bring attention to our nation’s sub-par chemical regulatory laws. The hope is that if enough babies come out to crawl (toward a faux Capitol, natch) then our government will change how it monitors the toxins contained in cleaning products. If making a statement doesn’t grab you, an 11:15am performance by the always-entertaining Gustafer Yellowgold should do the trick.
We love surprises, and we love them even more when they include one of our favorite kiddie crooners, Dan Zanes. In celebration of the release of his seventh children’s album, 76 Trombones, Zanes performs a free concert at Babesta Cribz in Tribeca. Not only will you get to enjoy an after-school dance party with your tots, you can also purchase the album, which drops today. Better yet, enter to win a copy of 76 Trombones here!
If you’ve got a tween girl, unplug the telephone, turn off the Jo Bros album and pop over to the Helen Mills Theatre today, where the Arts Effect NYC is holding a free afternoon of acting and writing workshops tailored to adolescent gals. Kids will learn from local directors, producers and actors, and develop their interests in the arts. A live theatrical performance follows the workshops, along with a “Girl Power”-themed party. Reservations are required. Click here to snag your spot.
We love classic circus spectacles like Barnum & Bailey and Big Apple, but the growing cirque nouveau trend is hard to resist. Much like the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil, Inside Out trades tricked-out elephants and cherry-nosed clowns for eclectic acrobatics and jaw-dropping stunts. Though Swedish troupe Cirkus Cirkor presents a performance that incorporates decidedly adult themes—namely, that the main characters feel trapped by their success—the astounding acts onstage keep little ones mesmerized. Check out our preview and slide show of Inside Out, then snag tickets while you still can: The show only runs through this weekend.
Head to the Tribeca Barnes & Noble today for a reading by the author of the Mo’s Nose series, Margaret Hyde. Her latest installation, Mo Smells the Holidays, focuses on the hard-to-learn lesson that giving is better than receiving, which can serve as a gentle reminder as the present-giving—and greed-inducing—season approaches.

The holiday season has unofficially begun. In addition to decorations popping up all over town, classic seasonal shows are raising their curtains this week, including Radio City Christmas Spectacular, White Christmas and Wintuk. Today, catch a sneak peek at a handful of acts from Cirque du Soleil’s acrobatic spectacle, outdoors in the Madison Square Garden Mall. And although temperatures will be mild, falling “snow” will give the illusion of winter. Best of all: The first 200 spectators will win two free tickets to Wintuk’s first performance on Thursday, November 12 at 7:30pm. How’s that for some holiday magic?
We already touted the USS New York as a great Veterans Day destination. But since the weather on Wednesday may turn out to be wet, today may be the perfect day to visit the brand-new battleship docked in Midtown West. With temperatures near 70, a walk down by the waterfront sounds heavenly. We may play hooky and join you.
