Head to chic boutique Estella this Thursday, November 19, where SHirin Kids, best known for its line of artsy hand-screened tees, will show off its foray into dresses. Act now: The frocks are limited-edition. Fans of the eco-friendly line can also peruse the “Winter Wonderland” collection, which includes SHirin’s signature tops and onesies. Bonus: If you’re one of the first 50 shoppers, you’ll snag a free SHirin tote bag.
For more savings, return to Estella next month: From December 3 through the 24, the store will have its annual holiday sale, during which you can stock up on cute kiddie clothes for up to 50% off.
Looking for a winter activity for your kids that doesn’t involve the word “ice”? The New York Junior Tennis League has your solution: The organization is offering tennis classes for kids of all ages on weekends. The cost? Nada. A few caveats: You’ll have to wake up before the sun rises (most sessions start at 6am!) and you must register in person. However, there are locations in every borough and plenty of opportunities for free play against other local tennis tots. The program just began, and runs through March; see nyjtl.org for locations and schedules. Game on!
We adore candy corn with a love bordering on obsession, but maybe your kids want to step it up a bit this Halloween. On Saturday, October 31st between 4pm and 6pm, fancy-pants shop Maison du Chocolat is giving out free mini choco bars to kids under 13 at its three NYC locations. Your child will score either a silky, dark chocolate Akosombo bar or a creamy, milk chocolate Monsera bar—even the names sound so much more impressive than a Special Dark or a Crunch bar.
I admit, I’m a total sucker for retro kitsch, even when it’s a tad over-processed and overpriced. That’s probably why I’m a fan of the Big Daddy’s restaurants, on the Upper East Side and in Gramercy (and soon the Upper West Side). The decor is colorful and campy—my daughter loves to identify all of the pop-cultural icons painted on the walls. The atmosphere, boisterous—don’t worry about your kid making noise here! And the food, though expensive, is heavy on comfort: They serve the best Tater Tots in the city. In an effort to up weekday business, the folks behind this mini-chain have instituted smart specials and activities. Their trivia nights have been selling out (two Time Out Kids editors tried their luck at the recent Saved by the Bell trivia night. Sadly they lost), and their food specials entice families to eat out more often. This week, you can enjoy free eggs all day with a buy one breakfast dish, get one free deal. Just print out and present the flyer. To get info on weekly specials delivered straight to your inbox, sign up for Big Daddy’s Insider’s Club.
