  • FREE coffee + pumpkin whoopie pies today in Midtown

Posted in Eat Out, Free stuff, food by Christy Purington on October 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 am

story_truckAt this time of year, the pumpkin craze takes over. There’s pumpkin custard, pumpkin fro-yo, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin doughnuts and even pumpkin coffee (we’ve got those last two on our desks right now). Today you can get in on the pumpkin fever for free: The Street Sweets truck will be doling out pumpkin whoopie pies and coffee, gratis, from 12:15–2pm. Head over to 50th between Sixth and Seventh Avenues to indulge. We suggest showing up on the earlier side, as quantities will likely be limited.

Amazing crepes at Yorkville Creperie on the Upper East Side

Posted in Eat Out, food, things to do by Rory Halperin on October 9th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

crepe_opened_up1Eating crepes stateside usually makes us long for the ones in Paris but we were pleasantly surprised by the treats at Yorkville Creperie on the Upper East Side. Kids will be wowed by the sweet selections, such as the “S’more”—chocolate, graham crackers crumbs and fluff—and the “PB&J”—creamy peanut butter with strawberry or grape jelly. Parents might be more inclined to go for the savory stuff: The “Roma” is filled with chicken and mozzarella cheese and topped with bruschetta. Plus, the open layout is perfect for strollers and little ones who don’t always stay in their seats. The eatery even hosts storytime sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 11am.

The Tribeca Treats Flavor Competition is back!

Posted in Eat Out, What's going on, food by Christy Purington on September 3rd, 2009 at 2:55 pm

smoretop-copyThe downtown Manhattan bakery, Tribeca Treats, is back for another round of its cupcake flavor competition. From Tuesday, Sept 8 to Friday, Sept 11 for just five bucks (every penny of which goes to ACE Programs for the Homeless), the bakery will be doling out samples of tasty treats from three or four semi-finalists, sweet-savvy New Yorkers who love spending time tinkering with their KitchenAids. This year, flavors such as chocolate hazelnut with Nutella filling, orange creamsicle and key lime are in the running. Think you’ve got the best taste in Gotham? You can submit your concoctions to the competition through tomorrow.

    Tribeca Treats Taste-Off Sept 8–Sept 11, 10am–7pm. 94 Reade St between W Broadway and Church St (212-571-0500, tribecatreats.com). $5 for the day’s sampling.

Want to know more about Tribeca Treats? Check out our article from the September issue about their new “frosting shots” which are as heavenly as they sound.

    Free Pinkberry tonight!

Posted in Eat Out, What's going on, food by Christy Purington on June 26th, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Not only is it stormy outside, now it’s humid, too. Cure those sticky summer blues with a taste of Pinkberry’s two new flavors: Coconut and passionfruit. YUM! The fro-yo masters are offering a free small dish of either flavor from 5–9pm tonight only. Grab your babes and start the weekend right!

    The cake of kiddie dreams…

Posted in food by Christy Purington on January 23rd, 2009 at 7:09 pm

n3222483_41432021_7990Sure, little sugar monsters don’t exactly care what a cake looks like, as long as it tastes delectable. But a super-duper pretty cake will still impress them. This one not only delights tiny eyes, it makes kids’ bellies dance as well. The best part is you don’t have to break any (er, too many) weight-loss resolutions to enjoy it: It’s completely fat-free. The secret is using Sprite instead of eggs, oil, butter and the like. My roommate made it for her office and can attest to its deliciousness (slightly dense but fulfills all your gooey, cake-batter desires). It would be great for any number of special occasions: your kid’s birthday party, a ’60s-themed soiree, or, um, a Tuesday.

You can find the complete recipe (and more enticing pictures) here. Mmmm…
