  • October deals and discounts

Posted in Discount Diva by Time Out Kids staff on October 5th, 2009 at 6:12 pm

Sure, you may end up blowing your budget on Halloween (although with our tips on making your own costumes and free or inexpensive events, there’s no reason why you should), but the deals below can help make this season a little easier on your wallet.

    • 10% off items at Firefly Children’s Boutique October 1 - 8

The cute kids clothing store is hosting a clothing drive to benefit the John D.V. Salvador Foundation from October 1 - 8. Bring in donations of summer (yup, we said summer!) duds, and enjoy 10% off any one regular priced item. Start your spring cleaning now! 224 Front St between Beekman St and Peck Slip, 646-416-6560.

    • Up to $50 off Britax products at Planet Kids through October 18

If you’re in the market for a new car seat, booster, stroller or infant carrier (or looking to buy a gift for one of your pregnant friends), Planet Kids is offering up to 50 bucks off all of its Britax products, both in store and online. It’s always nice to save on necessities! 191-193 Amsterdam Ave between 68th and 69th Sts, 212-362-3931 or 247 E 86th St between Second and Third Aves, 212-426-2040.

    • 20% off tickets to The Selfish Giant through October 25

Venerable children’s theater company Literally Alive revives its musical adaption of Oscar Wilde’s classic tale about a gruff giant who purges his garden of kids, only to realize that their uninhibited joy was what made the flowers bloom, birds sing and seasons change. Use the code TONYKids when purchasing tickets online, over the phone 212-352-3101 or at the box office and receive a 20% discount.

    • Up to 75% off children’s clothing at Bonpoint on October 28 - 29

Head to the Metropolitan Pavilion for super-saver deals on clothing from the French company. Item for both boys and girls ages newborn to tween will be up for grabs. Expect coats marked down hundreds of dollars and tons of winter-wear at a huge discount. 123 W 18th St between Sixth and Seventh Aves, fifth floor.

    • Kids get in free on weekday afternoons to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! through October 29

When we native New Yorkers rush through Times Square, we rarely register the tourist spots. And that’s a shame, because our kids would probably love all the spectacular sights in places like Madame Tussauds and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Well, this month’s the perfect time to pay a visit to the latter, and not just because it’s Halloween. Mon-Thu 4-7pm (except Columbus Day!), Ripley’s is offering an “After Ghoul Special:” kids under 13 get in free with the purchase of an adult ticket for $26.95. Little goblins will be treated to Jelly Belly treats, kookily costumed staff and a 5:30pm Halloween storytime. Sounds like a scarily good deal. 234 W 42nd St between Broadway and Eighth Ave, 212-398-3133.

    • $15 Halloween hairstyle at Cozy Cuts on October 31

Got a tot who needs his hair spookified on Halloween? Bring him to Cozy Cuts. The chain will perfect Junior’s coif for just $15—half of what the shop usually charges. Just head to one of its three locations, dressed in costume, of course—and the fearful ensemble will be topped off. Visit the website for locations and directions.

    • Winter class discount at apple seeds with registration by October 31

Get your tot enrolled in one of apple seeds’ winter classes—including “Apples & Crafts”, “Bookworms” and “Lunch & A Show”—by October 31, and save up to $50. If you’re still looking to sign your kids up for fall classes, it’s not to late: The spot will offer pro-rated prices if you act now. 10 W 25th St between Broadway and Sixth Ave, 212-792-7590.

    • 30% off selected kids costumes at the Children’s Place through October 31 (or while supplies last)

The Children’s Place has cute clothes and great deals all year long. That’s why we showcased them in our discount shopping guide. But they also have great holiday extras like adorable and affordable–not to mention machine washable–Halloween costumes. Right now, the chain’s offering a scarily good deal: 30% off selected costumes (which only cost $22.50-$29.50 full price) at all of their local locations through the end of the month (or while supplies last). Even if your kid already has an outfit for All Hallows’ Eve, it’s worth picking up an extra one or two. There are so many cool Halloween events this year, there’s no way your kid can wear the same ensemble to all of them!

    • 40% Shrek tickets through November 8

The folks behind Shrek are offering more ogre-sized savings, and as someone who’s seen the show twice (once with my four-year-old, once with the husband), I highly recommend you take advantage of this offer. The show is hilarious and sweet (just try to make it out of the theater without buying a $15 Shrek-ear headband if you can). Buy two full-priced tickets to any available performance through Sunday November 8 and save 40 percent. There are also giveaways and special events after every show. Visit shrektoberfest.com for additional details and to watch hilarious webisodes starring various cast members.

    • Save 65% on tickets to Magic and Zone through December 19

Catch stand-up comic-cum-magician, Rich Marotta, and his quirky bewigged assistant in Magic and Zone for 65% less. Individual tickets are $45, but you can snag a  family four pack for just $100 by using the code MAGICFAM. It’s a charming, low-key show. Under Marotta’s unassuming appearance and laid-back, Borscht Belt humor lies a heck of a trickster!

    • Kids eat free on weeknights at The Moxie Spot - ongoing

Brooklyn Heights haven The Moxie Spot is already a popular local destination for families, due to its laid-back atmosphere, games, movie screenings, storytimes and other complimentary events. You can also add free food to the list, as children dine gratis Mon-Thu 5:30pm-8:30pm. Get a free kid’s combo, side pasta, regular mac & cheese, or plain pizza with the purchase of one adult dinner entree. The special applies to deliveries as well. 81–83 Atlantic Ave at Hicks St, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, 718-923-9710.

Trade in old video games for new gift cards at Toys “R” Us

Posted in Toys, What's going on by Caitlin Brody on September 10th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

atari4With so many different gaming platforms, it’s a challenge to keep up with (and pay for!) all the latest games to satisfy your tech-savvy kids. But beginning Sunday, September 13, you can save yourself a little cash by exchanging used (or new and unwanted) video games for gift cards at Toys “R” Us. The retail chain is taking a page from video game giant GameStop (who’s been doing this for a while now) by accepting trade-ins at the Guest Services desk from myriad systems, including Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 1, 2 and 3, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, even games from ancient platforms such as Atari 2600, Intellivision, Sega Genesis. (Better start dusting off those old cartridges!) Games must be in their original cases with artwork intact. No word on how much each title will be worth, but right now, the abandoned games stashed under your kids’ bed are worth nothing, so you can’t lose…unless the brood convinces you to spend even more than what you get on the gift card. That’s clearly what the folks at Toys “R” Us are banking on.

You can submit your concoctions to the competition through tomorrow.
