  • Archie Comics announces an issue starring the child of one of our readers

Posted in Free stuff, In the news by Raven Snook on October 26th, 2009 at 1:52 pm

af139600Not sure if you’ve noticed, but we’ve been offering some pretty great giveaways of late. Today, for example, you can enter to win tickets to Sesame Street Live: When Elmo Grows Up, the Imagination Movers in concert or a $50 Children’s Place gift certificate. Back in the spring, we did what we consider to be the coolest contest so far: In conjunction with the annual Kids Comic Con, we gave the child of one lucky Time Out Kids reader a chance to appear in an Archie comic. An adorable girl named Summer won and, after months of work (the artist, Dan Parent, not only drew her likeness, Alex Simmons the writer made sure to capture her personality as well), the issue is almost here. Archie & Friends #139 Summer Spring Show will hit comic book shops on January 13, 2010. According to the press release, the plot is as follows: “Betty and Veronica babysit Summer. It soon becomes apparent that everyone’s favorite comic book teens are in for a really big show… and they’re the stars! Summer is a ’showbiz kid’ with a flair for the theatrical, and she literally shines the spotlight on Betty and Veronica as she engages them in interactive skits, songs and more.” We admit we’re totally geeking out right now…we may be even more excited about this than Summer.

Issue #2 in Archie marriage saga hits stands Monday

Posted in Arts & Culture, In the news by Vanessa Friedman on September 25th, 2009 at 4:56 pm

archie600Who can forget Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and the rest of the Riverdale crew? Though it’s likely been a while since you peeked into the comic characters’ lives, big things have been happening to them. In May, the Archie blog informed us that issue #600 was about to make a big announcement: The lovable redhead was going to propose to one of his two leading ladies! After 65 years of enduring the stressful yet hilarious love triangle, Mr. Andrews was finally making a decision. He’s been to approximately 42 high school proms at this point, so who can blame him?

The story is set to unfold in six issues, the first of which went on sale Sep 8 and revealed that he chose Veronica as his bride. As a lifelong Betty supporter, I’m devastated. Bets and Jughead both looked pretty confused, too, so I’m hoping it’s just a mix up—a bad dream, perhaps, or a blackmail ploy from Mr. Lodge. In any case, I’m excited to see what happens on Monday, when issue #2, “The Proposal,” goes on sale. Think ol’ Arch will reconsider?
