  • Free lessons at BumbleBee Tennis

Posted in Around Town, Free stuff, Sports by Carolyn Juris on November 19th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

dorothea_douglass‘Tis the season for generosity, but who says you can’t get something in return? From Tuesday November 24 through Thursday December 17, bring a nonperishable food donation to a participating BumbleBee Tennis location—one’s at the U.N. Plaza’s Millennium Hotel, the other is in Soho—and your child (age 3 to 9) can score a free introductory lesson.  Sign up in advance on the company’s website. It’s a great way to spread the, er, love. You should also check out our roundup of tennis classes around the city.

    FREE winter tennis classes!

Posted in Sports, things to do by Christy Purington on November 12th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

01Looking for a winter activity for your kids that doesn’t involve the word “ice”? The New York Junior Tennis League has your solution: The organization is offering tennis classes for kids of all ages on weekends. The cost? Nada. A few caveats: You’ll have to wake up before the sun rises (most sessions start at 6am!) and you must register in person. However, there are locations in every borough and plenty of opportunities for free play against other local tennis tots. The program just began, and runs through March; see nyjtl.org for locations and schedules. Game on!

Friday’s pick of the day: Yankees Victory Parade

Posted in In the news, Sports, things to do by Christy Purington on November 6th, 2009 at 7:00 am

picture-11Since they’re being raised in New York City, your kids are probably die-hard Yankees fans (unless they live for the Mets). If your brood wants to continue celebrating the Bronx Bombers’ victory, head to the Yankees Parade today, which begins at Battery Place and runs up Broadway to Chambers Street. If your little baseball enthusiasts are stuck in school, we suggest sneaking away from work and attending solo: It’s going to be quite a party. Congrats to Matsui, Rodriguez and the rest of the crew. You make us proud to be New Yorkers!

Young Yankees fans get into Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for free

Posted in Free stuff, Sports, things to do by Blair Tidwell on October 27th, 2009 at 7:26 am

baseball_caps_yankeesIn one of the weirder (but kind of cool) tie-ins we’ve seen, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Times Square is offering free entry to kids sporting Yankees caps. Young fans ages 4 to 16 of the World Series-bound home team receive complimentary admission through November 6 when they visit with one paying adult. Although the tourist spot is known for its collection of bizarre rarities like shrunken heads and and six-legged animals, the museum has also acquired baseball artifacts over the years: a 1931 wooden novelty postcard signed by 16 players, including Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, and three seats taken from the original Yankee Stadium in 1923. As for Mets fans…maybe next year.

Big Apple Games begins! Free sports activities for kids in all five boroughs

Posted in Around Town, Free stuff, Sports by Christy Purington on July 10th, 2009 at 3:54 pm

e00006444The DOE has officially launched Big Apple Games, a six-week program offering free recreational activities for kids ages 8 to 19. The no-cost fun has been organized by the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), which oversees competitive high school sports during the academic year. There are 48 spots in all five boroughs where your brood can participate. Not only will there be tons of traditional sports (including basketball, softball, baseball, volleyball, swimming, football, soccer and lacrosse), but arts and crafts activities are on the agenda, too.

Want some extra incentive to take part? Various locations will offer special programs with local pros, including basketball clinics with players from the New York Liberty and Harlem Wizards. Time to get your game on!

Big Apple Games run through August 13. Click here for a list of activities and locations, or dial 311 for additional info.

Wii Fit promotes fitness–to a fault?

Posted in In the news, Sports by Julia Israel on May 20th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

I finally lugged home my Wii Fit, rallied the troupes (otherwise known as my sister and my boyfriend) and tried out the exercise system’s various training games. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. On the one hand, I understood that this was designed as a substitute for my (infrequent) trips to Crunch, an adults-only gym. But I also knew that every commercial I’ve seen for Wii Fit has featured slim children head butting soccer balls. I wondered: Would this be an extension of Wii sports or a substitute for Abs of Steel?

As I discovered last night,  Wii Fit is both. It’s filled with motion-sensitive games that simulate fun-filled, outdoor activities—like downhill skiing, hula-hooping and walking a tight rope. These diversions were so much fun that three of us found actually argued about who’s turn it was (usually it was mine). But Wii Fit also features a required fit test, in which each player’s BMI (Body Mass Index) is measured and a goal for weight loss is set. It also includes traditional aerobic and strength training exercises, like push-ups and sit-ups. As you continue to play, the Wii Fit starts to ask questions about your weight. "Is your tummy looking flatter?" it chirped at me. I was startled. If I were ten years old, would it ask me the same question?

Perhaps I’m overly sensitive, but in an age when eating disorders are an epidemic, it seems dangerous to bring the idea of weight-loss into a realm where kids have never had to feel body conscious. The saving grace of video games is that they put each player on equal footing. You can be an overweight and uncoordinated kid and still manage to obliterate your skinny, star-athlete friend in any competition. In playing Wii Fit, however, children are forced back into their own bodies, and have to face their own capabilities and weaknesses. If you’re a parent considering getting the game, I’d suggest setting it up for your child before each round of play so that he can forego the goal-setting/weight measuring introduction—and consequently lose weight without suffering a loss of confidence. After all, it’s GREAT that kids are getting off the couch. I just don’t want them getting off the couch and getting themselves into an emotional funk.

The other slight problem with Wii Fit is that while the balance games are fun, they’re also a bit, well, difficult. They measure very subtle shifts in weight, which means mastering a game could be a challenge for tykes who are used to running around freely. The Wii doesn’t instruct you in how to shift your weight either–it just tells you to do it. If your little one can’t figure it out, he’s never going to win the game.

Though Wii Fit may not be the ideal gift for your kid, it is perfect for busy parents who can’t get to the gym without hiring a babysitter. I’m definitely going to keep using mine.

Wii Fit, $90, available at the Nintendo World Store, 10 Rockefeller Plaza between Fifth and Sixth Aves (nintendoworldstore.com). Subway: B, D, F, V to 50th St–Rockefeller Ctr.

Update: TONY Kids tests out Wii Fit

Posted in In the news, Sports by Julia Israel on May 19th, 2008 at 11:39 am

wii fitAs mentioned below, Nintendo is letting kids—and any and all adults who feel OK making adorable children wait—test Wii Fit, their brand new, super-hyped exercise system. I stopped by this morning to check out the fun, and I’d say it’s well worth an after school trip. The players weren’t exactly breaking a sweat, but they were enjoying typically detested gym class activities, like lunges and head-butting a soccer ball (good news: it doesn’t hurt when the soccer ball is virtual!). Nintendo is also giving away sealed cups of water, free t-shirts and socks.

And if all the fun makes your child covetous of his own system, check back here tomorrow for my full review of the game. No, I’m not a kid, but trust me: My athletic ability is equivalent (if not inferior) to your eight year old’s.
