  • Family Day at the Whitney tomorrow

Posted in Art, Museums & Sights, What's going on by Julia Israel on October 2nd, 2009 at 2:13 pm

okeeffe_series-i-noIf you’ve yet to see the Whitney’s Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition which we touted in our September issue, tomorrow afternoon is the perfect time to check it out. During the museum’s annual Family Day, admission is just 10 bucks for your entire brood. (Technically kids under 18 get in free, but we assume parents are going too!) The fee includes access to the exhibition plus a ton of awesome, kid-friendly activities, including guided gallery tours, abstract art workshops and even window box planting in honor of O’Keeffe’s signature subject. Bonus: With tons of kids running around, no one will notice if your darlings misbehave.

DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival

Can you believe it’s nearly October? Neither can we. But as the dark winter months loom, we can’t help but love this gorgeous fall weather. Thankfully, there are tons of local offerings to get you and your brood out of that stuffy old apartment and into the autumn breeze. While we’ve rounded up a whole bunch of great events taking place throughout the weekend, these high points are too cool to be missed:

The Kitchen Block Party: Chelsea hosts a whole afternoon of family-friendly fun on Saturday, including musical performances, craft workshops (like puppet making and cookie decorating!), photo booths, face painting and plenty of tasty food. Best of all, it’s free!

Smithsonian Museum Day: Toting your kids along to the city’s fabulous museums can get a bit pricey—especially if you’ve got more than one tot. On Saturday, a HUGE number of the Big Apple’s cultural institutions are offering free admission, which means your crew can explore the artsy side of the city without breaking the bank. Plenty of kid-centric workshops and activities accompany the event.

DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival: It’ll be worth your while to wedge one more stop into your lineup on Saturday, the second of three days in this annual fete. Join creative Gothamites as they unite on the shores of Brooklyn below the Manhattan Bridge to create dozens of art installations. Kids will get a kick out of Jess Proia’s Assimilation Fish, which features glittering orange fish on parade through the nabe (3–6pm). Did we mention that the fest is free?

While you’re out and about this weekend, don’t forget to take note of the leaves that are just beginning to change color; check out our foliage guide to help your kiddos identify the various plants and trees they spy.

If you’re looking to trade the bustling city for the serene countryside, browse through our best bets for apple- and pumpkin-picking at nearby orchards. Does it get more autumn than that?

    Wild at heart

Posted in Books, Museums & Sights, What's going on by Carolyn Juris on September 24th, 2009 at 11:42 am

wildthings1Are your kids as excited about the new Where the Wild Things Are movie as we are? Remind them where it all began with this short-run exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum. On view from Tuesday October 6 (ten days before the movie opens) through Sunday November 1, the exhibit features Maurice Sendak’s original drawings from and early drafts of the 1963 book, including a preliminary sketch that didn’t make it into the final version—Max on all fours atop the dinner table, slurping spaghetti. Given that Wild Things is said to be partially autobiographical, inspired by long family dinners in 1930s Brooklyn, we’d love the chance to have supper in the Sendak household.

Central Park debuts its celebrity-voiced audio guide

Posted in Around Town, Arts & Culture, Museums & Sights by Vanessa Friedman on June 25th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Looking for a way to spice up your Central Park adventures? Then listen up—literally. The Park’s Conservancy has just debuted its “Seeing Central Park Audio Guide,” which features personal anecdotes by famous New Yorkers such as Jerry Seinfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kevin Bacon. Here’s how it works: When you get to the park, grab an Audio Guide map at the Conservancy Visitor Center, or plan your route online before you go. Once you come upon a stop, dial the Audio Guide number followed by the designated extension and a short-but-sweet story will unfold. As is the case with the similar Tree Museum public art installation on the Grand Concourse, you may want to bring a cell with speaker phone so everyone can listen.

Though the star-factor may be lost on younger kids, the tales, which are a combination of facts and feelings, aim to please. Perhaps they’ll inspire children to share their Central Park memories too. If you want to test out the tour before you schlep, check out the video below. How can you say no to Whoopi?

    Train in vain

Posted in Holiday, In the news, Museums & Sights by Carolyn Juris on December 12th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Talk about hurting the little guy: Citigroup’s much publicized financial woes, which resulted in a $45 billion government bailout, also mean the end of its beloved holiday train show. The beleagured company is withdrawing sponsorship of the display after this season ends, so if your family plans to take in the expansive model railway, catch it by January 2. Continuing the free-to-the-public display next year would cost Citigroup about $240,00—a lot of money to most of us, but a paltry sum to a company that is spending $400 million to slap its name on Shea Stadium 2.0. As a Queens resident, I call shenanigans.
