Okay, so we were wrong about Elmo, but Google is still highlighting Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary, this time with dynamic duo Bert and Ernie. What’s even cooler is that Google has vamped up their “Google Doodle” with different characters in countries worldwide. Check them all out on this website dedicated entirely to the Doodle, which showcases every one of Google’s past logos in the US and abroad.
Since they’re being raised in New York City, your kids are probably die-hard Yankees fans (unless they live for the Mets). If your brood wants to continue celebrating the Bronx Bombers’ victory, head to the Yankees Parade today, which begins at Battery Place and runs up Broadway to Chambers Street. If your little baseball enthusiasts are stuck in school, we suggest sneaking away from work and attending solo: It’s going to be quite a party. Congrats to Matsui, Rodriguez and the rest of the crew. You make us proud to be New Yorkers!
The execs over at Google must be pretty big fans of the Street, because they’re honoring the show’s 40th anniversary again today. This time, the logo incorporates Cookie Monster noshing on one of his favorite treats, with his big Google-y eyes serving as Os. Who do you think will appear tomorrow? Our money’s on Elmo!
Most people don’t embrace their 40th birthday as enthusiastically as Sesame Street (guess monsters age really well). Then again, few humans get an exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library, a restospective book and a best of DVD in honor of the occasion. Today, google is also marking the milestone adding Big Bird’s bottom half to its logo. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Happy Birthday Sesame Street!
If your kids have the day off from school today. there’s plenty to keep them busy at spots around the city. After you tote ‘em to the polls (be sure to read our take on the candidates first), head to Lefferts Historic House where kids can cast their own ballots in an Election Day Celebration. Once your kid has voted, hang around for some patriotic cake and to hear the winner announced at 4pm. Happy voting!
We’re currently updating our roundup of the best ice-skating rinks in the city and we’re sorry to say that two spots that were just unveiled last season won’t be back. Although the websites for the American Museum of Natural History’s Polar Rink—which featured a recyclable synthetic surface in lieu of ice—and Seaport Ice have not been updated with this info, the folks answering the phone confirm that neither rink will reopen this year. Thankfully stalwarts such as Rock Center, Wollman and Chelsea Piers aren’t going anywhere!
When trying to lull your babe to bed, the last thing you want hitting his sensitive ears are Axl Rose’s high-pitched squeals. But Rockabye Baby has found a way to turn Guns N’ Roses’ metal anthems into melodies intended to soothe, not stir. Like all of the series releases, this new album uses softer instrumentation. Tracks we’re most excited for: “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.” Add the album to your wishlist, or check out Rockabye Baby’s other remakes including AC/DC, Aerosmith and the Beach Boys.
