Your family’s calendar is already filling up with holiday parties…time to start shopping for cute kiddie clothes. Starting this Sunday, both NYC Firefly boutiques are hosting sales, offering 20% off select holiday dresses and formal wear. Even if you’ve got clothes to last through Christmas 2010, we suggest popping in, as large toy sets will also be discounted. 224 Front St between Beekman St and Peck Slip, 646-416-6560; 240 Seventh Ave between 4th and 5th Sts, Park Slope, 718-965-3535, fireflychildrensboutique.com.
Evidenced by our many, many blog posts on sales this week, holiday shopping is in full force. At the Goddard Riverside Community Book Fair this weekend, you can strike a seasonal balance between mass consumption and giving. Sponsored by the local publishing industry for over 20 years, the sale benefits the namesake community center. Shoppers can choose from thousands of brand-new donated tomes (including lots of children’s books), which are sold at half the normal cost. For the best deals, go on Sunday, when prices will be slashed down even more. Sat Nov, 21 10am–6pm, Sun Nov 22 11am–5pm. Goddard Riverside Community Center, 593 Columbus Ave at 88th St (212-873-6600, goddard.org).
This afternoon, the Radio City Rockettes will hop off stage and onto the streets, where they’ll hide out in a secret spot somewhere around town. (How in the world do you hide all those gams?) Fans are then invited on a scavenger hunt to uncover where the lovely ladies are secluded. Starting at 3:30pm, clues to their whereabouts will be revealed every ten minutes via the Rockettes’ Twitter account. Stay close to your TwitterBerry app as your wander around Gotham with your brood. Prizes—a bundle of tickets, perhaps?—will be awarded to the top three hunters.
Think we’re overstating it? Well, just check out this incredible NYC holiday prize package. Even Santa wants to get his hands on this one. It includes:
- Tickets to a host of hit shows, including the Radio City Hall Christmas Spectacular, Wintuk, The Nutcracker and others
- Free entry to the Bronx Zoo, the Holiday Train Show at New York Botanical Garden and the Top of the Rock and more
- Goodies such as a Nintendo DSi system, The Nightmare Before Christmas on DVD, $100 Wendy Mink gift certificate and more
To peruse a complete list of prizes and to enter, just click here. Yup, it’s that simple. Happy holidays (way in advance).
Even though our all-female staff doesn’t quite get this holiday tradition, we know that many families enjoy collecting Hess toy trucks. (Any of you dads care to explain?) The newest model hits the market this Friday, November 13, and it actually isn’t a truck; it’s a race car (the first car featured since Hess’s 1993 patrol car). For secret compartment fans, it features a door that opens to reveal a miniature race car inside. You can pick up the hot rod at any area Hess location for $25.
You may have already heard that the Pond at Bryant Park began welcoming ice-skaters today. But there’s more seasonal cheer to be had at the family-friendly greenspace: the holiday shops have opened as well. Peruse Popsicle-shaped bath soaps at Just Bubbly, games galore at The Games Place, bear-paw mittens at Bear Hands and Buddies and more. The kiosks will be open Mon-Fri 11am-8pm, Sat 10am-9pm and Sun 10am-6pm through January 3.
If you can spare one of the masterpieces hanging on your refrigerator (um, yeah), send your kid’s best holiday-themed work to Lands’ End for a chance to win a gift card of up to $500. If your little Picasso’s piece is picked, it will also be showcased on the company’s website. So whip out those crayons and have Junior get to it; anything from snowmen to menorahs will do. Last year’s winners included a picture of a girl catching snowflakes on her tongue and a cute-as-pie penguin holding a gift.
