What to do this Thanksgiving weekend: Nov 26-29 event picks

Posted in Things to Do by Christy Purington on November 25th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

paradenewsletterfreeHappy Turkey Day! If you can wake your little sleepyheads up in time, head to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to see Spider-Man, Sailor Mickey and, of course, Santa trek down their new Seventh Avenue route. Before you set your alarm, check out our tips for surviving the main event without having a meltdown.

Holiday fairs have set up camp and window displays are on view around town, and a gaggle of festive shows are playing as well. Got out-of-town guests visiting the Big Apple? Peruse our handy visitors guide for easy ways to keep them—and your own tots—entertained.

Free events abound this weekend, from ice-skating at Bryant Park to a very cool tree lighting at South Street Seaport. If you want to cozy up indoors, Chelsea’s Books of Wonder hosts a holiday kick-off with an amazing lineup of children’s authors. To see all free picks over the four-day weekend, click here.

If you don’t mind spending a few bucks, you can catch Disney’s The Princess and the Frog this weekend, as well as the legendary Nutcracker ballet. Looking for some silly songs to groove to? The FunkeyMonkeys are putting on a Thanksgiving-themed bash on the Upper West Side. See all Saturday events here.

It’s your last chance to catch three shows this weekend: Peter and the Wolf at the New Victory,  Matthew Takes Mannahatta at the Vital Children’s Theatre and Disney on Ice’s Let’s Celebrate. If you’re looking to extend Thanksgiving good will past Thursday, check out the Children’s Museum of Manhattan Freedom Feast. See all Sunday picks here.
