Just like last week, there’s another random holiday breaking up the normal public school routine. It’s a Wednesday, which means Broadway matinees are an option if you feel like spending some bucks. (You may be able to snag discounted seats. Check out our guide to scoring cheap theater tickets.) Let’s hope for the same kind of fabulous weather we had on Election Day, so we can spend the day outside. But if your brood (or you) get tired of the playground, here are a few free activity options.
If your kids have ever dreamed of boarding a real battleship, check out the just commissioned USS New York, one of the U.S. Navy’s fleet of “San Antonio-class LPD (Landing Platform, Dock) warships,” which is docked in Midtown West through Veterans Day. Seems like the perfect way to celebrate the spirit of the holiday.
Author Margaret Hyde reads the latest book in her Mo’s Nose series, Mo Smells the Holidays A Scentsational Journey at the Tribeca Barnes & Noble.
Singer Emily Rabon Hall gives a free music class for tuneful tots at FAO Schwarz.
There are a few newish art exhibits sure to amuse kids. We’ve already touted the “Art of the Samurai” show at the Met (kids are always free and adults can pay what they want). “The Experience of Green” installation at the Dumbo Arts Center looks super cool, just check out our slide show, and suggested entry donation is just two bucks.
The one totally free ice-skating rink in the city, the Pond at Bryant Park, is open for gliding.
Wednesday’s it’s pay-what-you-wish at the Bronx Zoo (although we encourage you to pay whatever you can!).
And of course, there’s the 90th annual Veterans Day Parade, which begins at Madison Square Park and travels up Fifth Avenue. There’s also a street fair at the end of the route.
Know of any free (or we’ll take cheap!) family-friendly events happening on November 11? Share the info in the comments.
