    TastyBite unfrozen dinners

Posted in food by Maureen Shelly on October 27th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

tyb-0000441Our latest food obsession is the line of shelf-stable prepared meals from TastyBite. Normally we’re not fans of packaged food, which is often overprocessed, unhealthy and culinarily blah. But this company, which produces Indian and Thai dishes that often cater to special diets (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher), is rocking our overscheduled, budget-conscious world.

Each delicious dish is flavored with a different mixture of turmeric, clove, cardamom, cinnamon, fennel, cilantro and curry leaves. They’re spicy but not hot by any adult measure; adventurous kids can handle them too. We’re still making our way through all the flavors, but so far favorites include Sprouts Curry & Basmati Rice, Spinach Dal & Basmati Rice, Punjab Eggplant and Spinach Soy.

The meals have a good balance of healthy fat, fiber and protein. For instance, the Vegetable Supreme & Basmati Rice meal contains 317 calories, 6g fat, 11g fiber, 11g protein and 18% RDA of iron. All meals contain no preservatives and minimal cholesterol and sugar. And the shelf-stable part is great since our freezers always seem to be overstuffed. The specially sealed packaging keeps out bacteria while retaining nutrients and flavor for 18 months. (Apparently, the meals first caught on among campers.) Why can’t other companies do this? We wonder if it has something to do with volume. TastyBite says many of its ingredients come from its own farm near Pune, India, where its factory is also located. (By the way, TastyBite was recently named one of India’s Best Companies to Work For. If it got any bigger, maybe the dishes wouldn’t be so good—which is why we hesitated before blogging about them!) You can buy TastyBite at Fairway for about $2.69 each, and Whole Foods carries them too for slightly more.
