  • Fashion Focus continues with sister cities and students

Posted in Fashion Week, Shopping and style by Robin Clement on October 6th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Following last Wednesday’s kick-off, Fashion Focus Chicago carried on last Thursday with ABC7 news anchor Linda Yu emceeing Chicago Sister Cities International World Fashion Chicago. The concept was a bit confusing: Chicago designers worked on their collection with a muse from one of the sister cities abroad, while international designers were also picked to represent those cities with no Chicago ties.

Twenty-eight cities were represented, with much variety. Some creations were architectural with hard lines, while others were very flowy and organic. In both cases, the coy designs didn’t reveal themselves in full until they hit the runway. Jasmine di Milo’s (Paris, France) black leggings seemed ordinary until the model moved to show grey stripes down her inner leg. AGGA B. (Warsaw, Poland) pulled a Harvey "Two Face" Dent from The Dark Knight with a semi-cocooned jacket with black front and cobalt back.

More movies were referenced with Lauren Lein’s (Birmingham, England) hats of flowers and ribbons, looking very Eliza-at-the-races in My Fair Lady (at bottom). Another feminine delight was seen by Elda De La Rosa (Mexico City, Mexico): Her black gown, which fanned out at the bodice (at left), was a toned down version of the Zac Posen bridesmaid dress worn by Charlotte in the Sex and the City movie.

    On the scene: Macy’s Glamorama

Posted in Shopping and style by Robin Clement on August 27th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

After taking an odd turn last year with a country and western theme, last week’s Macy’s-produced Glamorama fashion show at the Chicago Theatre was host to all the 1980s essentials. Here are some of the highlights:

Fashion seen: Gen Art Film fest red carpet

Posted in Shopping and style by Robin Clement on June 25th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Alia Shawkat at the Gen Art Film fest

Isaac Mizrahi once said on his TV show, Isaac, the rule to follow in fashion is to break them all. The trend does not shy away from the red carpet, and this held true for the opening night of Monday’s Gen Art Film Festival and the indie film Bart Got a Room, about 18-year-old Danny Stain’s desperate search for a prom date. Supporting actress Alia Shawkat (best known, of course as Maeby on Arrested Development) tapped into her inner prom queen by arriving to the Music Box Theatre in a 1980s prom dress. Shawkat told us that the pink frock, with blossoming sleeves and skirt was purchased at Canada’s Divine Decadence, a vintage couture boutique in Toronto.

Closing time for Lenny & Me and Public I

Posted in Shopping and style by Robin Clement on June 20th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Vintage store Lenny & Me is closing its doors. In response, the store is hosting a sale beginning this weekend ‘til its August close. Everything in the store is 30-90% off. Expect prices to be marked down even more as August approaches. The L&M withdrawal could be short-lived, as it may reopen with a new concept. So, keep ’em crossed.

After 12 years in business, the owners of Public I have decided to close shop in mid-August. They are ready to move on, wishing for free time to travel and spend time with the fam. Starting tomorrow, all merchandise at Public I will be 40% off, including already marked items. For the best deals, visit the shop after Saturday and take advantage of 50% sales off all merchandise.
