    Project LUSH: Week four

When we entered Kit Kat for week four of our booze blitz, we each seemed to be having some doubts about our pasts, presents, and futures. Did we let “the one” go? Are we excelling in our careers? Are these 100 martinis going to give us cirrhosis of the liver? Okay, maybe health wasn’t our primary concern, but you catch our drift. It wasn’t booze, but rather a few members of Kit Kat’s staff, like the three ghosts of a gay Christmas Carol, who set our minds at ease.

Like the gay ghost of the present, our trusty bartender served us up some new martinis that gave us something to believe in, like the fresh and fruity Kit Kat Passion and the delectable Lemonhead martini.

Taking us to the future was Kit Kat’s in-house tarot card reader, Therese Murphy. After asking Jason a few questions and balancing their collective energy, she assured our drinking buddy that all was right in the worlds of love and work. He just needed to take some time and enjoy the view.

Finally, like a big ghost of gay pride’s past, George Michael, wearing those infamously tight blue jeans, appeared on one of Kit Kat’s screens and reminded us that we just gotta have faith.

Okay, maybe nothing too revelatory happened during week four of Project LUSH, but it soothed us enough to bring you these 15 drinks that are sure to stand the test of time.

Drink 46: The Kit Kat (vodka, melon liqueur, triple sec, splash of lime juice)
After tasting Kit Kat’s signature drink we all had some mixed feelings, particularly when considering some of our Kit Kat faves. While Jason and I liked the vibrant green color of the martini, we weren’t convinced that the taste warranted giving it the bar’s name. Mark, on the other hand, was completely on board and wanted more.

Drink 47: Kit Kat Black (vodka, raspberry liqueur)
Unlike it’s green cousin, this darker libation seemed to satisfy our taste buds. All three of us agreed that the raspberry flavor reminded us of either a tasty jolly rancher or a cool freeze pop.

Drink 48: Kit Kat Passion (vodka, passion fruit pureé)
The passion fruit pureé let us feel healthy drinking this martini, but there is no doubt that it’s really quite naughty.

Drink 49: Kitty’s Dream (vodka, orange juice, splash of cream)
Better than a wet dream or a complete nightmare? It’s subjective. While Jason absolutely enjoyed the smoothness and refreshing qualities of the drink, Mark and I thought it was too similar to a creamsicle and wanted something more grown-up.

Drink 50: La Villa Vanilla (vodka, splash of vanilla, splash of cranberry juice)
Although the concept of this martini seemed to be spot on, the execution left us a little underwhelmed. The combination of the vanilla and cranberry didn’t blend quite well and we all thought it almost as boring as an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.

Reaching the half-way point of our cocktail mission, we decided to take a moment to think about our past and try a new food creation by one of the owner’s parents. We were served up a supremely spicy and excellent shrimp curry that was perfect to wash down with a nice martini. Now on to the next 50.

Drink 51: Lemonhead (vodka, fresh lemon juice, splash of sprite)
Pucker up baby, this is some good head (lemonhead that is). The thought of the fresh lemon juice in this drink is making our mouths water right now. We each thought that it was the perfect mixture of sweet and sour and far superior to an ordinary lemon drop.

Drink 52: Lemon Meringue Pie (vodka, lemon juice, thrilla vanilla, splash of cream)
Another winner in the “tastes better than an actual slice of pie” category. This creation was extremely smooth but had a great amount of texture from the graham cracker crust. A little cream is always great.

With our various gay ghosts looming around Kit Kat it was no surprise that when a half -naked, muscly skate boarder walked down the street one would have thought there was a seven car pile-up the way we stared. Just goes to show you, past, present, or future, gay skateboarders are always a little hot.

Drink 53: My Birthday Cake (vodka, wild strawberry and chocolate liqueurs, pineapple juice, thrilla vanilla, splash of cream)
While I would have loved to receive this sweet and pink creation for my birthday, my two drinking partners respectfully disagreed. Mark thought that the only surprise he got from this drink was disappointment, and Jason believed that only a Lincoln Park trixie would order this because it’s pink.

Drink 54: Made Ya Blush (gin, pineapple, razzmatazz, splash of lime)
Departing from our usual, vodka driven drinks, this baby packed a bit of a punch with some gin. While Mark and Jason liked the frothiness and pineapple taste of the martini, it only made me frown. I think the gin really just masks the other flavors.

Drink 55: Madras (vodka, cranberry juice, splash of orange juice)
The were really two completely divergent views on this drink, but what they do have in common are grandmothers. On the one hand, Jason thought this drink was so boring that only someone’s grandma would choose it, while Mark and I thought that it was so strong only a 60 year old grandmother’s liver can handle it. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

Drink 56: Mango Martini (vodka, fresh mango pureé, splash of peachtree schnapps)
We heart mango! The pureé for this martini was impeccable and the splash of schnapps gives it enough of an alcoholic taste without being overpowering. Perfect drink for those hot summer days.

Drink 57: Martini Sunrise (vodka, orange juice, grenadine)
With three different layers of vibrant colors (red, orange, and yellow) this drink gets a win in the presentation category. As for taste, the verdict is out. I enjoyed the mixture of flavors so much that at one point I asked if there was even alcohol in it (that spells trouble). Mark and Jason, however, thought it was pretty boring and wanted some tequila in it instead.

Drink 58: Melon Ball (vodka, orange juice, melon liqueur)
Though we enjoy some good balls once and a while, this particular one left a bad taste in our mouths. Once we saw the terrified expression on Mark’s face when he took a drink, Jason and I knew we were in trouble. The orange juice and melon just don’t seem to mesh well at all.

Drink 59: Midnight Express (vodka, light and dark Starbuck’s liqueurs, splash of cream)
The best part about waking up used to be Foldger’s in your cup, until this drink came along. We have found our new morning drink, if only it came in a venti version. The mixture of cream and two Starbuck’s liqueurs creates a coffee martini that is smooth and decadent.

Drink 60: Mongo Bongo (vodka, fresh fruit pureé, splash of orange juice)
After a few of these you will want to play bongos all night long. With the excellent texture from the fresh fruit pureé and the tang of the orange juice this martini is the perfect amount of sweet and fruit.
