Doom + Mos Def + Mike Relm at the Congress Theater: Photo gallery

Was Doom there? Did he rap? Or send an impostor to lip-sync? Many sources say that Doom sent a fake up to do his work on the microphone—but I wasn’t there to judge. But I’m told chants of “fuck Doom” could be heard throughout the venue.

What a joke…all the rumors are true…was there…obviously a “Doompostor” whose mic was off, a DJ staring at a laptop, and a hype man with a mic louder than the track the impersonator was fake rhyming to…All involved should be ashamed, I was robbed 35 dollars to see Mos Def open up for a shorter/fatter version of a lip syncing Doom. How can Mos Def be on board with this mess….Saw Mike Relm and Maker after the show, they seemed as shocked and cheated as we were.

    2. Posted by jps on February 14th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Awful show. Doom was not there- clearly a Doombot (no recognition of crowd and only time he picked up the mic was when the record was playing). Mos just isn’t a good live performer. Really disappointing- how long will Doom fans pay for tickets to be insulted with imposters?

    3. Posted by 5hiza on February 14th, 2010 at 4:46 pm

I was in the front row…had been there for about 6 hours before he came on. When DOOM came out to “All Caps” the crowd went crazy! It only took me about 20 seconds to realize that WHOMEVER was on stage, be it DOOM or an imposter was definitely lipsyncing. After having to wait that long to see him for the first time in 4 years (everytime he’s scheduled to appear in Chicago, he’s a no-show), we decided to walk out on that show. Soooo disappointing!

    4. Posted by 2su on February 14th, 2010 at 5:46 pm

It was absolutely a fake Doom. But the crowd was so full of douchebags that it almost felt warranted. How do you pay money to see a show and then proceed to boo each artist off the stage. I mean even MosDef got booed. Least he was semi-legit… even if he’s rapping over super old Lib & Oh No loops.

    5. Posted by L on February 14th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

I was at the show front row. Mos Doom showed up five hours late and Doom didn’t show his sorry masked face at all. When Mos Def finally did take the stage he gave a lousy half hour performance that was an insult to his fans and a waste of all of our time. This is the worst show I’ve ever been to and a saddening day for music. Respect to Mike Relm who showed up and did his job and then some, spinning a two hour video mashup that at least kept people alive on thier feet. The bottles, beers and trash that were thrown at the other DJ’s and for Mos Def and Doom’s utter disrespect were utterly deserved. So were the chants of “Fuck Doom” and boos and “Fuck You’s” thrown out for BBU and Dooms fraudulent cronies. Mos Def, I hope you get the bitchslap you deserve. You’re no longer welcome on the streets where your fans are still standing. Keep your sorry face in the VIP booth with the rest of the jade fame-addled fucks who don’t care about anything but themselves. And PS you’re Doom’s little bitch now.

By the way 2su, if I pay money for a show with certain headliners and what I get is a bunch of impromptu local artists that are clearly unprepared and incapable of properly hyping a crowd, than yes, they are getting bood. I’m not going to pretend I like it just because I paid for it. Maybe that’s the kind of douchebag you are.

WOW-THIS HAD TO BE THE WACKEST SHOW I HAVE EVER WITNESSED! OK WE GOT THERE AT 6PM TO WAIT IN LINE (SECURITY WAS VERY VERY RUDE AND SO INSECURE THAT HE HAD TO PLAY THIS MACHO ROLE WHAT A LOSER AND THAT BASICALLY SET THE MOOD LEAVING A BAD TASTE IN EVERYONES MOUTH -THEN WAITED UNTIL MAYBE 9ISH TO ENTER THE STANDING AREA (WE HAD FRONT AND CENTER RIGHT AT THE GATE). FAST FOWARD: THE DJ’S WHO FILLED TIME “SUCKED” THE FIRST ONE COULD NOT MIX AT ALL HE JUST DROPPED THE NEXT SONG LIKE A HOT POTATO-VERY BAD! THE GUEST ACT BBU SUCKED AND GOT BOOOO’D SO BAD, AND THE GUY WITH THE LONG HAIR GOT HIT WITH THE 1ST OBJECT TO BE THROWN. BY THE WAY-ME AND MY PARTNER IN CRIME LED THE LONG “DOOM….WHERE IS DOOM, WHERE ARE YOU DOOM WTF!” OK YES QWEL WAS A GREAT HIGHLIGHT-PROPS TO YOU! MIKE RELM STARTED OFF VERY ARTISTIC, THEN TURNED WEIRD-LET ME EXPLAIN-HIS VIDEO MIXING WAS SATANIC-HE ALSO SHOWED CHILDREN IN INAPPROPRIATE CIRCUMSTANCES-AND JUST A LOT OF OTHER VIOLENCE AND THINGS-PLUS HIS ACT WAS WAAAAAYYYYY TO LONG (HOURS- THEN THIS BUTCH CHICK PSALM ONE CAME ON AND SHE LOOKED LIKE A HOOD RAT! VERY DISTASTEFUL! SHE SUCKED- EVERYONE WANTED DOOM- AT LEAST THEY SHOULD HAVE BECAUSE MOS DEF-NOT TO JUMP AHEAD BUT HE IS SOOOO WACK! HE SUCKS SOOO BAD! UM THEN MY P AND I WERE TIRED OF WAITING-I HAD TO PEE REALLY BAD-THE DOOM BOOOO’S CONTINUED EGGING HIM ON TO PLEASE SAVE THE SHOW-THEN THIS ONE GUY GOT ON STAGE AND HAD THE CHANCE TO OPEN A BOTTLE OF WATER AND SPRAY IT EVERYWHERE-Let THE RAIN OF BEER, WATER AND ANY OTHER OBJECT BEGIN! EVERYTHING WAS THROWN ON STAGE AND SECURITY WAS SO STUPID THEY DID NOT DO ANYTHING. THEN FORWARD- MOS DEFINITELY WACK CAME ON STAGE LOOKING LIKE HE JUST CAME FROM DANCING WITH THE DEVIL-HE IS A SATANIC FREAK! HE WAS CHANTING RITUAL SPELLS AND DOING RITUAL DANCES-WEARING A WOMEN’S FACE MASK THAT LOOKED LIKE A DEMON CUT OUT AND PERFORMED IN ALL RED LIGHTING! NOT TO MENTION THE HYPNOTIC CIRCLES SPINNING ON THE OUTTER SIDES OF THE STAGE AND THE BIG “7″ ON STAGE WHICH THAT NUMBER IS VERY SIGNIFICATE AND I AM NOT A FOOL AS TO WHY IT WAS UP THE WAY IT WAS! MOS DEF-WACK ALSO GOT BOOO’D AND HIT WITH A BEER BOTTLE-THEN GOT MAD AND STARTED KICKING ALL OF THEM OFF THE STAGE! THEN CALLED OUT WHO KEPT SAYING WHERE IS DOOM-AS IF WE WANTING TO SEE HIS WACK PERFORMANCE OF RITUALS ANYMORE! DOOM-ENTERED and of course it was not him the own thing WAS WACK AND IT ENDED IN MORE RAIN OF BOTTLES BEER WATER AND WATEVER! NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT MY P AND I CUT OUT SAFELY! THE END

Hands down the worst concert-going experience I’ve ever had. Mike Relm was the highlight…but he went on for way too long and he’s not the one I paid the money to see. Mos’ set was pretty good, but I expect more than thirty minutes out of a co-headliner that makes everyone wait for five hours. And I certainly expect more than twenty minutes of sloppy ass lip syncing out of DOOM or whoever the hell is wearing the mask. Terrible show, terrible venue. Rappers need to start treating fans with respect.

… I-mean, I’m a Doom fan, but I must admit, I couldn’t really tell if that was him or not … How can we be CERTAIN about this ? … Can anyone do some photo analysis or something ? … I am dissapointed with the show, however: Qwel and Mike Relm did give us our money’s worth; it’s just unfortunate that’s not who we paid for …

The show was far from great. The venue was fair but those clowns who run it needs some skills in Event Management. It took entirely too long to enter the venue because of their lack of organization. Mike R. was cool… FOR THE 1st 45 MINUTES!!! Then it was flat out boring. The crowd became restless bc he was on stage wht seemed like forever. However the worst was the wack azz fans. These idiots a booing to no end ANY and EVERYONE. Keep your stupid azz at home if you not even TRYING to give positive energy to the artists. Doom was a disappointment and his set was very short. Mos start off rippin it and it kinda fell off and folks was still crying WTH was Doom. I found it super hot how Mos was rhyming Doom’s Accordion and ALL CAPS. Alot of the idiots didnt know Ecstatic and seemed unable to relate. Um, dummies at least know his latest album and put the alcohol down for more than 5 minutes, LOL

    14. Posted by kyle nixon on February 15th, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Let me first say, Mos Def solo sucks. I paid to see DOOM.

I have been listening to him long enough to not be surprised at the way it unfolded, however, as a paying customer I expect a refund. I don’t care if its part of his “act” its not right to make people wait til 1:30 in the morning and sit through mos defs bull/the 3 or 4 other openers (props to Mike Relm his set was dope).

I had friends who had will call and it took them an hour of standing in the cold to get in. I also met plenty of people from other states who drove for hours to witness this catastrophe.

Might I also add the congress theatre has the most cracked out security guards who were taking peoples lighters at the door.
Might wanna put that on the ticket otherwise I believe thats called stealing, regardless of the no smoking policy.

Also, they had the security roaming the crowd and if you got caught smoking you had big man security #1 and #2 in your face, reaching in your pockets, opening your wallet, and even reaching down your pants. Yes this really happened to someone right next to me. I don’t understand how its okay for people to be selling pills in the bathroom but its not okay for people to smoke a little cancer, or herbal relief. The venue also ran out of beer reportedly (meaning they made so much money a refund shouldn’t be a problem at 5$ a beer).
      I wasn’t drinking, or smoking.

I contacted the congress 773-276-1235 and they told me to call the promoter (Lucas King) 312-519-9010.
After text/call bombing his phone for the past 24 hours he finally responded with a text early today saying all refunds will be honored through clubtix.com.

      http://www.clubtix.net/index.php?con=customer_support_add

is the direct link. I’ll post again as soon as I get a reply, or tomorrow morning if I don’t.

    15. Posted by natalie on February 15th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

to anyone questioning whether that was doom or not– I was in the very front row of people and could CLEARLY see lip syncing. it was so obvious that close up. he would bring the microphone back up to his mouth too late sometimes and i don’t have a doubt in my mind that wasn’t him. watch videos of him performing on youtube. it is a WORLD of difference. on top of that, an artist is NEVER going to rap exactly the same, with every single line said with the EXACT same intonation/variance in pitch as on the recorded track. there’s no way that would be possible. that’s why they had his mic “turned down” (aka the track was playing at a lower volume than the hype man’s mic), so it would be harder to tell that there were no differences in doom rapping onstage and doom on a pre-recorded track you’ve heard 1000 times. and either way it was still obvious.

the whole thing is just pathetic and sad.

    16. Posted by N on February 15th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

thanks for posting that. we’ll see if it actually pans out - but seriously, its bs having to pay for a show where the headliner shows up. Why hasn’t there been a real revolt against Doom?

    17. Posted by L on February 15th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

Thanks to Kyle Nixon for the update on a refund. I’ve been trying to contact his promoter as well. Keep us posted if you hear word, for now I’ve contacted clubtix through the link.

wth…wait from 7pm til 1am and got a worst show, this is the worst show I’ve ever seen.
Damn I don’t kno what I stand 6 hours for, Mos and Doom just show up about 30 mins then left, they didn’t gave respect to us!!!

    21. Posted by Bin Bin on February 16th, 2010 at 10:56 am

Easily the worst concert experience I’ve had in 15 years. This venue was totally unprepared, the promoter’s cronies were out there extorting kids who were standing for up to 3 HOURS in 10 degrees (”pay me $20 more, and you’ll get to the front of the will call line…” — that is extortion, plainly), and when I called them on it, I was told “F U, leave.”

So this morning I hit up the IL Attorney General’s Office, the Alderman from Logan Square, and the Better Business Bureau. Unfortunately, when an F-U is directed at me, I usually have the last word.

    22. Posted by BroBruh on February 16th, 2010 at 11:25 am

It is a sad day when an artist’s fan-base feels like they have been robbed by the artist himself. It is interesting that so many “hardcore Doom fans” even bother to attend his live shows. Don’t you listen?!? If you look at Doom’s discography it is very similar to that of Ghostface (Minus the Beat CDs) in the sense that they both release the same lyrics, beats on multiple albums. If you just now noticed that Doom is robbin yo’ ass then you haven’t been paying attention. The dude is a villain, and any chance he gets he’s going to take advantage of ignorant people.

A little advice. Don’t buy tickets to his live shows and don’t support his album releases or any releases on Metal Fingers. Maybe then he won’t have the money to pay an impostor.

    23. Posted by Fitzgotit on February 16th, 2010 at 1:52 pm

When there are moronic fans who were chanting ” where’s doom” during the opening acts, it makes sense why Doom sends an imposter, and mos def shows up late. Because all you simple minded haters don’t deserve a good show. Why would you degenerates even show up for the opening acts if you guys are so afraid of something new?

    24. Posted by Dan on February 16th, 2010 at 1:56 pm

One of the worst show I’ve ever seen. This is what happens when a MC goes Hollywood and the other is just collecting checks. The promoters should give a refund and the Mos and Doom should be sued.

I’m proud of the crowd there. They stood up to this garbage and let it be know. Chicago will not tolerate Wack MC’s!

    25. Posted by Elliot on February 16th, 2010 at 2:57 pm

It’s funny how some people seem to be so condescending because they know Doom to be a villain. But what about those of us who showed up for Mos Def and got a halfassed performance. Doom can be what he wants, but I’ve never known Mos Def to scam his fans and don’t appreciate him presenting himself as a legitimate artist and then sheisting thousands of people out of their money. It’s sorry when this is what the music has come to - fools fighting over who knew the artist would rob them or not. Hip-hop is dead. Nas got it right when he brought he out the fuckin coffin.

    26. Posted by Fitzgotit on February 16th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

Hey bin bin, how hard did the attorney general’s office laugh when you called that extortion?

This is the response from clubtix.net in regards to receiving a refund on your tickets :

      Hello,

Thank you for emailing Clubtix about this issue.

We would like to first start off by saying that Clubtix is NOT a promoter and was NOT the promoter for this event. We are ONLY a online ticketing website used by promoters and venues to sell tickets.

It is unfortunate that we cannot grant your refund request at the time because the allegations on this event have yet been confirmed. No one can provide solid proof that DOOM was not present. There is a open investigation on the “rumor” and until it is proven guilty, no refunds will be given.

We are working directly with everyone to resolve this issue in a timely matter and would appreciate your patience.

Below is the release from the Venue and Promoter while the investigation is in progress.

      ——-

There are rumors floating around that this past Saturday’s DOOM show was performed by a person who was not DOOM.

The promoters of the show: React, Cold Grums, Silver Wrapper and the Congress Theater understand the rumors and are NOT ignoring the issue.

At the current time, React, Cold Grums, Silver Wrapper and the Congress Theater DO NOT have any proof that the person who performed was not Daniel Dumile, a.k.a. Doom. The show was legally contracted and paid for in full. The show was officially listed on Doom’s website. React, Cold Grums and Silver Wrapper are all independent promoters, and pour our lives into our shows.

Circumstances beyond the promoter’s and venue’s control prevented the artists from arriving on time, and the promoters elected to keep the venue open late so that the show could go on.
React, Cold Grums, Silver Wrapper and the Congress Theater are conducting an investigation with the Talent Agency, Management and Legal representatives for Doom. Because the show was legally contracted and paid for in full, any breach of contract could result in serious legal action. Doom’s representatives are also preparing a statement.

Regardless of any of opinions, compelling proof of the matter is needed to take legal action on it. Until the investigation reaches conclusion, and proof is in hand, the promoters will not issue any refunds. At the current time, it is a rumor. This issue is being treated with the utmost respect and consideration.

React, Cold Grums, Silver Wrapper and the Congress Theater will release a statement clarifying the results in the coming days.

all refunds will be honored? obviously not, mr. lucas king. it’s insane that the promoters and congress are saying they are “investigating”. the venue would have to be in on this. they know the truth, so their “investigation” is not going to lead to anything. they controlled the sound system that night. they know what they did. there isn’t any motivation for them to find out the “truth” because they were a part of the whole thing. there is no way a performer could pull that off without people who run the venue knowing. not possible.

it’s a shame nothing’s going to come of this. i don’t see how hitting up the bbb or anything is going to help because there isn’t going to be real proof of anything. they can deny anything they want. we were all there and we know what happened (front row- it was undeniable), but it can’t be proven they were playing a track for doom’s voice or anything. i could see the lip syncing, but my phone of course wasn’t good enough to capture it. they got all of us. good for them.

we need to do something about this - call major attention to this online. how do we do this - how do we move past griping on message boards? i at least want it to get some coverage in the entertainment circles, so doom and co realize what a crock this all is.

      All I can say is:

First off, I think Hiphopisdead is really Kanye… Who else types in all caps. Yeezey, please hook us up.

Second and furthermore, I have to say that the Congress Theater is just about the worst venue I’ve ever been to anywhere for anything.

Thirdly: DOOM has a reputation for running the oke doke, but I mean right now? When people are broke and just want to see a good show to take their minds off of more upsetting things? For serious?

      Fourth: MOS DEF sucked. Period.

Fifth and finally: QWELL & MAKER KILLED IT EVERY WHICH WAY FROM SATURDAY!!!! Same for Mike Relm!! Keep an eye and ear out for those three.

      P.E.A.C.E.
