Five things to do today: December 8

Posted in Around Town by John Dugan on December 8th, 2009 at 12:00 pm

SHOPPING & STYLE - Gamma Player sale
Global design hub Gamma Player peels some of the sticker shock off of its cutting-edge silhouettes. Now through Sun 13, all spring/summer collections, including fashions from Berlin and Sweden, and fall/winter collections from brands such as Julius, Jean-Pierre Bragaza and Odeur, are 50% off. Translation: Enjoy major price relief on items including wool cardigans and overcoats, mohair hats and more. 2035 W Division St (773-235-0755, gammaplayer.com). El: Blue to Damen. Bus: 50, 56, 70. Tue–Sat 11am–7pm; Sun noon–6pm.

    COMEDY - Robert Buscemi
The quirky (and currently L.A.-based) comic comes home for an extended set. Lincoln Lodge, (773-251-1539). El: Brown to Irving Park. Bus: 11, 50, 78, 80, 152. 8pm, $10.

FILM - YouTube Assembly and Open Mic
This isn’t really a film event—more like a community gathering—but it sounds pretty fun to us: Mairead Case and Bryan Wendorf are hosting YouTube Assembly and Open Mic, an event at which the audience members bring picks of interesting YouTube videos. Nightingale, 1084 N Milwaukee Ave (573-289-4329). El: Blue to Division. Bus: 56, 66, 70. Tue 8 at 8pm. Suggested admission is $7.

DANCE - eighth blackbird with Mark DeChiazza: Pierrot Lunaire
Continuing the cross-disciplinary adventurousness they displayed in last year’s collaboration with choreographer Susan Marshall, avant-chamber ensemble eighth blackbird fleshes out Arnold Schoenberg’s 1912 cycle of sung poems with the help of New York dance maker Mark DeChiazza, with soprano Lucy Shelton as the voice of percussionist Matthew Duvall’s Pierrot. Harris Theater, 205 E Randolph St, between Michigan Ave and Columbus Dr, Loop/West Loop, Chicago (312-334-7777). 7:30pm; $30, students $10.

    MUSIC - David Boykin Expanse
Powerful local saxophonist Boykin blows hard for the lunchtime set as part of the city’s Jazz, Blues & Beyond weekly. Chicago Cultural Center, Randolph Café, 12:15pm, FREE!
