Last night’s episode of Weeds took a gamble and leaped six months into the future, allowing several plot threads, like Nancy’s pregnancy and Silas’s pot club to quickly progress to more interesting stages of the story. This fast forward is likely to pay off.
Nancy and Shane are living at Esteban’s decadent mansion and everything seems to be going quite well. Esteban proposes to Nancy and she accepts. Shane seems to be getting along with his stepfather-to-be and he’s also skipping summer school to spend time with Ignacio. Though he seems to see the danger in the latter when Ignacio turns surprisingly violent on a trip to the driving range.
The Ren Mar clan is struggling a bit more. Celia is working at a Super Sneakers store in the mall and insisting on wearing high heels when commuting to work as sneakers are the footwear of her “corporate overlords.” Silas is getting shaken down for more money from C.P., who’s constantly hanging around the pot club, which isn’t exactly conducive to business. Doug has become obsessed with George Hamilton and he’s got the incredibly fake tan to prove it. And then there’s poor Andy, whose grown a crazy mountain man beard, blown most of Judah’s money on stupid crap (including a replica of the Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee) and spends his days glued to a Ms. Pac-Man game in a attempt to break the world record.
Nancy attempts to reconnect with Andy, who hasn’t spoken to her since he received her note, to tell her about her impending nuptials. Sadly, Andy doesn’t even acknowledge her presence. She also carries the news, in much more smug packaging, to the prison to visit Guillermo. Clearly, she’s feeling a bit cocky and wants to shove it in his face after his prediction that she’d end up in a landfill. She also brings a veiled threat, noting that Esteban professes that he loves her enough to kill for her.
Andy grudgingly brings himself to Esteban’s estate to offer his blessings on the couple’s engagement. The rivalry between the two men comes out in a fencing match. When alone with Nancy, Andy sincerely offers his best wishes her, but warns her that when Esteban meets the same end as Judah and Peter, he will not be there to help her pick up the pieces. As Andy exits, a woman storms into the house (presumably Esteban’s current wife) and delivers a tirade to Esteban. Unfortunately, my high school Spanish is a bit more than rusty, but she definitely used the word “gringa” on more than one occasion. After she abruptly leaves, Esteban informs Nancy that they will not be able to get married.
I’ve made it clear that I’m no fan of Esteban’s, especially post-sexual assault, so seeing he and Nancy canoodling after his proposal is quite disturbing. However, the preview of next week’s episode seems like things will be shaken up even beyond the angry “other woman.” It was nice to see Andy stand up to Nancy, as she really has taken his contributions for granted. The Celia and Doug plot threads were almost non-existent and fairly ridiculous. I’ve been really enjoying Silas turn towards adulthood this season, but his constant pairing with Doug is really undermining that. I wish they’d allow him to spend a bit more time with Nancy or Andy. All in all, the time jump may serve the latter half of the season well, but Weeds was largely playing catch-up in this episode, setting things in motion for the future.
