Tonight marks Matthew “Recloose” Chicoine’s triumphant return to the Midwest and his first set in Chicago in just over two years. Chicoine, originally a Detroit resident, grew up on that city’s rich dance music heritage—channeling everything from deep house, techno and even a little bit of Motown soul into his early productions. Having caught the ear of influential techno innovator Carl Craig, Chicoine released his first records on Craigs’s Planet E label and quickly grew into a Detroit staple.
Realizing that there were many more musical paths to be explored, Chicoine pulled a massive lifestyle switcheroo. He up and moved to New Zealand where he immersed himself in the unique—and much more laid back—scene down under. He buddied up to kiwi reggae sensations Fat Freddys Drop and subsequently released Hiatus on the Horizon for Peace Frog to show off his new found love of more bubbly, horn-driven and eclectic productions.
Still happily settled in antipodean surroundings, Chicoine is touring this summer on the back of last years Perfect Timing LP release for Sonar Kollektiv and we’re lucky to have him back in town, playing at Funky Buddha Lounge tonight for one of Good For Party’s always-on-point weekend events there.
To help wet your whistle for the festivities, Chicoine took time to drop his top tunes for July on us. Behold:
Shake Aletti “Digital Connection” (Recloose Remix)
I was really busy in the studio before I dipped out to the states, this is one of the remixes I finished before I left. On some shoulder-rolling, future-boogie, player-istic business… much like my sets at the moment.
Romanowski “Train Song” (Chug Chug Mix)
Another mid-tempo bouncer lifted straight from Kid Creole’s “Endicott”, but re-rocked so well. On some happy b-boy shit…
Based On Kyoto “Flying Pan”
I can’t say enough about this dude at the moment. I got the first bits from B.O.K. on my last trip to Japan via Japonica records. This is another electronic steel drum ditty, a real summer time stunner. Look out for the James Pants remix of “Flower” too.
Rondenion “Storm”
Some more heat from Japan, this time from Rondenion doing a really good Moodymann impression. Dark, filter-disco, bug-out funk. Do I need some more adjectives?
Los Amigos Invisibles “Plastic Woman” (Recloose and Frank Booker Remix)
Another one wrapped up on the way out the door with my man Frank Booker. Venezuelan boogie bounce, this one will be out via Lovemonk later this year. You can here this on my latest radio show here: www.hititandquititradio.blogspot.com
And here’s a bit more of Recloose to whet your appetite for tonight. And this just in: He’s promising a set of buttery Michael Jackson rarities he’s collected crate-digging all over the world.
