I swear I don’t normally say anything like what I’m about to say, but The Pains of Being Pure at Heart played a set Saturday afternoon that can only be described as adorable. The New York four-piece became a favorite of Pitchfork writers this year, garnering positive review for both a debut EP and full-length album. And yet the band was clearly surprised at the crowd of loyal online readers that came out to see them today. The Pains played through their repertoire of fuzzy, English-accented C86-style indie pop, pausing occasionally between songs to gaze wide-eyed at the eager audience.

Singer and guitarist Kip Berman’s meekness was balanced out by his vocal support, keyboardist and singer Peggy Wang, who was just as reserved as Berman, but pulled off her quietness with occasional, slight, bashful smiles. The Pains provided for a relaxing change of pace after the blazing Fucked Up, and the their hazy-but-poppy songs were the perfect complement to the on-again-off-again drizzle of rain that went on throughout the set.
