More Bites, More Benders: July 14–19

Posted in Around Town, Restaurants and bars by Sarah Grainer on July 14th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

    TUESDAY 14
If you’re going to bookend your workday with a drink anyway, you might as well do it for a good cause at the District tonight. Heartland Alliance’s National Immigrant Justice Center hosts a happy hour benefiting the organization and its quest for human rights protection for immigrants and refugees. Your ticket gets you unlimited beer and wine. $30. 6–8pm. Purchase tickets here.

    WEDNESDAY 15
So, say you’re hosting some sort of summertime party. You could be like everyone else and serve beer or margaritas made from a mix, or you could serve caipirinhas, a traditional Brazilian cocktail. Roll your Rs and act like it’s no big deal. But first you need to learn how to make them at Carnivale’s Caipirinhas 101 class tonight. $25. 6:30–8:30pm. For reservations, call 312-850-5005.

    THURSDAY 16
Two delicious, summery and probably under-utilized treats come together for the Era of Elegance Champagne and Gelato pairing class tonight at Let Them Eat Chocolate. The class covers the basics of both, then delves into how to best combine them. Includes plenty of sampling for the sake of learning. $55. 7pm–8:30pm. Get a ticket on their website.

    FRIDAY 17
Timothy O’Toole’s celebrates its 17th birthday today with a complimentary appetizer buffet and a blast to the (not too distant) past when they opened: they’ll play 90s music videos as you sit around drinking Miller High Life for only $1.70, sure to be a nostalgic experience in itself. Speaking of nostalgia, if you feel confident in your memory, try your hand at the most specific trivia contest ever, exclusive to the year 1992. 11am–3am. Free!

    SATURDAY 18
Slow Food Chicago hosts a tour of Devon Avenue, a part of town best experienced by way of your taste buds. It kicks off at Tahoora Restaurant and moves through India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (the Chicago versions) from there. $20. 10:30am. 2345 W Devon Ave. For reservations, head here.

    SUNDAY 19
Spend your Sunday evening on a lovely (and relatively unknown) patio at the Dine at Dusk event at Witts, featuring wines of Southern Italy and Sicily and a four-course menu filled with simple Italian classics like octopus salad and homemade ravioli. $40. 8:30–10:30pm. For reservations, call 312-404-2310.
