If you’ve seen this week’s TOC, you know there’s a big batch of summer shows opening this weekend. Check the Art & Design listings for details and our slideshow for a sneak peek of what’s on view. Here are some events—all FREE—that didn’t make it into print:
Tonight, from 7–10pm on the South Side, Vespine showcases Joseph Lupo’s drawings and other handmade reproductions of his own shopping receipts, Logsdon 1909 hosts “Polymorphic Polymers,” a live performance and video installation by Renee Shaw, and Eastern Expansion hosts Christopher Smith’s installation “Philosophical Husband–Tetsuo,” which references Japanese films along with consumerism.
In Albany Park, from 8–11pm, Swimming Pool Project Space unveils “DOGCAT: FBI (The Feline Behavioral Institute) vs. Canine Fashion” with a fashion show for dogs. Between this and Barque, it’s no wonder they hate us.
In Ukrainian Village, Rotofugi presents new metal and ceramic sculptures by Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura from 7–10pm. In River North from 5:30–7:30pm. Zg Gallery highlights Anna Jóelsdóttir’s abstract drawings and paintings in “the dandelions are over” and Jean Albano Gallery celebrates its 20th anniversary in the neighborhood with the group show “Cool! Cool! Cool! Cool!”.
On Saturday 11, Humboldt Park apartment gallery Eel Space raises funds with a Work on Paper Silent Auction from 5–7pm. Wicker Park’s Around the Coyote hosts an opening reception from 6–9pm for the “2nd Annual Joseph Frasca Memorial Works on Paper Juried Exhibition.” Participating artists, who were selected by Zg Gallery directors Myra Casis and Meg Sheehy, include Stacie Johnson and KS Rives.
