If you’re a connossieur of so-bad-it’s-good cinema, you probably already know about The Room, which screens tonight and tomorrow at midnight at the Music Box. Actually, so-bad-it’s-good is too mild; it’s more like “so-bad-it-makes-you-slap-your-forehead-and-cry-for-the-state-of-humanity.” It may even make you nostalgic for Pieces, which is shlocky in a way that suggests at least someone on the set was having fun. But there’s no denying that The Room—at this point I would describe the plot, but there isn’t one—exerts a strange fascination. As preparation (and for background), you should read TOC alum Steve Heisler’s jaw-droppingly funny interview with writer-director-star Tommy Wiseau. I’ll be there tonight to see the movie with an audience, which should be more fun than watching it at home (though nothing could spoil this film). The impressively comprehensive Wikipedia entry describes the film’s cult appeal more thoroughly than I possibly could. Tickets are available through TicketWeb.
