Five things to do today: May 20

Posted in Around Town by John Dugan on May 20th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Evidently, we all can’t be college dropout hip-hop superstar moguls. Earlier this week, Kanye West and the Kanye West Foundation (KWF) announced that Kanye will performing live at a”Stay in School” benefit concert at the historic Chicago Theatre on Thursday, June 11. Benefit concert tickets go on sale tomorrow, Thursday, May 21. Tickets range from $50 to $500 for the VIP reception. There’s more than just a concert going on—a lot more. Approximately 3,000 inner-city and Chicago-area students will get to hear Kanye’s soundcheck at noon and meet the rapper.

If you didn’t get the message about staying in school, get out and do five things.

    FILM - Chicago360
We’re big fans of local film production company Split Pillow’s Chicago360 project, chronicling life in our fair city over a period of years in short films by locals. This year’s films involve things we do to play. The filmmakers—John Firak, Sam Barber, RJ Buckler, John Pappas and Jennifer Thornton—will be present for discussion. Music Box, 3733 N Southport Ave between Grace St and Waveland Ave (773-871-6604). El: Brown to Southport. Bus: 80 Irving Park, 152 Addison. 7:30pm. Regular and midnight $9.25, first daily show $8.75.

NIGHTLIFE - Black Moth Super Rainbow & School of Seven Bells
This West Loop rock hub welcomes back the droning walls of sound and electronic trickery of School of Seven Bells as it joins the glitchy folk-hop of playfully bookish nerds Black Moth Super Rainbow. Although it will surely be a night of shoe-gazing and esoteric subject matter, the electronic undertones of both bands offer a refreshing change of pace for the Bottom Lounge. Bottom Lounge. 8pm. $15, in advance $12.

    MUSIC - Lokua Kanza
Soukous star Kanza brings delightfully breezy, acoustic soul from the Congo. Old Town School of Folk Music, 8:30pm, donation $5.

ART & DESIGN - The Show ‘n Tell Show

Graphic designer Jay Ryan and other presenters discuss book design. The Whistler, 2421 N Milwaukee Ave (773-227-3530, showntellshow.com). El: Blue to California. Bus: 52, 56, 74. 7pm. FREE!

SHOPPING & STYLE - Continuum Studio
Bring sexy back, literally, with this monthlong offer at Continuum. Any time you book a standard facial, the spa offers you a complimentary 30-minute Sexy Back treatment, which includes a full cleansing, exfoliation, mud masque and moisturizer. 5671 N Clark St (773-728-7883, continuumstudio.com). El: Red to Bryn Mawr. Bus: 22, 50. Mon–Fri 11am–8pm; Sat, Sun 10am–6pm.
