Like most in Chicago’s journalism crowd, I was fascinated by the recent discussion prompted by Scott Smith’s Chicago Journalism Town Hall post. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that it just about filled my journalism quota for 2009. And then comes this beauty, a bit of guerrilla media criticism by Oak Leaves reporter John Huston. Last night, he was at the Oak Park Village Board meeting, when he noticed that his colleague at the competing Wednesday Journal, Marty Stempniak, was fighting a brave battle with the sandman. Huston, whose News Peg blog is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the oddities of the ‘burbs, took out his camera and caught Stempniak’s defeat on film. And then set it to music.
Full disclosure: I was once a reporter at the Oak Leaves, and Huston remains a close friend. Fuller disclosure: I also witnessed a Wednesday Journal reporter enter la-la land at a public meeting. When her dream jolted her awake, she threw her pen halfway across the room. Talk about a recurring nightmare.

His actions might seem indefensible, but having spent nearly a decade working at community newspapers I commiserate.
The guy’s probably in the middle of what will be a 60-hour workweek (for which he’ll probably make the princely sum of , what, $350-$400?) . That day’s assignments have probably already included some kind of cheque presentation, the obligatory cute kid photo and maybe a cutesy feature on a vegetable that resembles a politician. Or Elvis.
Now it’s 9 p.m., and instead of watching TV on the couch like normal people, he’s sitting in a meeting listening to councillors blathering on about mill rates. Cut the guy some slack already.
