Sad story alert: Harry’s Hot Dogs at Randolph and Franklin will close in April to make room for a park. And what better way to say goodbye than stopping by this Friday when owner Harry Heftman celebrates his 100th birthday by putting in another day’s work at the shop he’s run since 1954. The Hungarian immigrant arrived to the U.S. at age 12, and has been working in the food biz ever since. Here’s hoping one of you bakers out there steps up to the plate and delivers a hot dog-shaped birthday cake to Harry on Friday.
300 W Randolph St at Franklin Ave (312-782-7386). Breakfast and lunch (Mon–Fri).

Met Harry and his Hot Dog stand in the late 60’s…. and have frequently returned to visit and have a “dog.” Great guy, always has a smile and always remembered his customers. Enjoyed going back to help him celebrate his 100th B’Day on 3/13/09. Good memories….. too bad another “institution” is going by the wayside.
