Pitchfork Music Fest 2009: July 17–19

Posted in Music, Pitchfork Music Fest 2008, Pitchfork Music Fest 2009, SXSW 2009 by Brent DiCrescenzo on February 27th, 2009 at 10:43 am

The king of snark and Brooklyn star-searching announced the dates for its fourth annual music festival (fifth, if you count its turn curating the inaugural Intonation Festival in 2005). As usual, Pitchfork Music Fest’s set for late July, the weekend of the 17th through 19th, in Union Park.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 13.

Hey, no acts have been announced, but let’s take a crack at the lineup. In my Lolla crystal ball–gazing, I mentioned that Grizzly Bear seemed like a shoe-in headliner. The band’s upcoming album is, somehow, like the Iron Man 2 for kids who shop at American Apparel. I would’ve put the much-hyped Animal Collective at the top, but the band played last year—just before it really blew up. Doh!

But here are the other acts that the site’s been big on in the last few months. Put money on ‘em:

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
    Wavves
    tUnE-yArDs
    School of Seven Bells
    Crystal Stilts
    Crystal Antlers
[anything with "Crystal" in the name]
    Telepathe
    Ponytail
    Vivian Girls
    Blitzen Trapper
    Black Lips
    Kid Sister
    Beirut
    Little Boots
    Wale
    These Are Powers…

And then pretty much anything else on Secretly Canadian, Sub Pop, Carpark and Slumberland records. Pitchfork’s SXSW showcase is always a good feeler for slot-fillers, too.

As for the highlight—Friday night’s “Don’t Look Back” series, in which iconic bands play a classic album straight through—I’ll take some stabs at that, too.

    * Saint Etienne is playing its Foxbase Alpha in the U.K. this spring. Don’t count it out. Pitchfork is a fan.
    * Built to Spill did some Perfect From Now On gigs in ‘08 but never hit Chicago. This wouldn’t be a shock.
    * The Dismemberment Plan’s Emergency & I came out ten years ago. It helped put Pitchfork on the map, and vice versa. It’s a long-shot but makes sense.
    * The Jesus Lizard is playing some shows again. Goat for the hometown fans? Please?

And then there are the announced 2009 “Don’t Look Back” performances in NYC and the U.K.—Suicide doing Suicide and Young Marble Giants doing Colossal Youth.

Any of that would be great. I just got excited making up that Friday bill. Stay tuned.

Would love to see Ponytail there.
