If you missed last year’s No Pants Ride on the CTA, mark your calendar for this Saturday, January 10 (via stevekrzysiak). Here are some pictures from last year’s event.
And here are five things to do today. Pants definitely not optional.
ART & DESIGN - “Not Just Another Pretty Face.”
Nick Cave, Carol Jackson, Juan Angel Chavez and dozens of other Chicago-based artists present more than 70 works that were specially commissioned by local patrons. Through Jan 11. 10am–8pm. Hyde Park Art Center, 5020 S Cornell Ave. 773-324-5520, hydeparkart.org. Bus: 6, 15, 28. Metra: Elec Main to 51st/53rd St. FREE!
CLUBS - Rehab
The black-eyeliner-lovin’ folks at the Chicago Suicide Club and Derek Berry of We Are the Weekend make magic out of Monday night with this youth-friendly party that’s likely to be a net loss for your nine-to-five career. The playlist is dance-punk, club classics and accessible hip-hop. 9pm. Evil Olive, 1551 W Division St. (773-235-9100, evil-olive.com). El: Blue to Division. Bus: 9, 56, 70. $5, free before midnight with R.S.V.P. through going.com.
MUSEUMS & CULTURE - “In the Dark”
It’s that time of year (sigh)—there are fewer hours of daylight, our shadows get longer, and there’s a general moody, gloomy feeling in the air. To make the most of it all, the Notebaert unveiled this 4,000-square-foot interactive exhibit examining different environments of darkness and the life forms that inhabit them. Five walk-through dioramas include “Darkness of Night” where simulated, nocturnal versions of the Great Smoky Mountains, Sonoran Desert and a Louisiana cypress swamp provide examples of animals that get busy once the sun goes down. In “Darkness of the Deep Sea,” the environment is eternally murky and creatures use bacteria instead of light as an energy source. 9am–4:30pm. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 N Cannon Dr. 773-755-5100, naturemuseum.org. Bus: 74 Fullerton, 151 Sheridan (24hrs). FREE!
MUSIC - Satanized + Jeff Brown Duplex
Jeff Brown Duplex features the aforementioned Brown but might be better known for its drummer, Brian Mcomber of East Coast Afro-experimentalists Dirty Projectors. However, fans of the Brooklyn-based quartet won’t find many melodic similarities here. Instead, JBD’s aggressive sonic assault lies closer to power duos like godheadSilo or Lightning Bolt. Philadelphia’s Satanized takes it even further, favoring the sort of bombastic minimalism favored by Steve Albini. 9pm. Empty Bottle, 1035 N Western Ave. (773-276-3600, emptybottle.com). Bus: 49 Western (24hrs), 70 Division. FREE!
THEATER - That’s Weird, Grandma
Barrel of Monkeys does it all for the children. The troupe’s screwball evening of short plays is written by Chicago Public School students (grades three to six) and performed with abandon to match. The fact that it’s also the most entertaining show an adult might stumble upon is just a happy coincidence. The best reason we can think of to live in Chicago on a Monday. 8pm. Neo-Futurarium, 5153 N Ashland Ave. 312-409-1954. El: Red to Berwyn. Bus: 22 Clark (24hrs), 92 Foster. $10, kids $5.
