More bites, more benders: This week’s eating and drinking events

Posted in Restaurants and bars by Kris Fedor on December 2nd, 2008 at 8:41 am

    TUESDAY

Still feeling guilty about buying that "live" Christmas tree? Take the edge off at Greenheart Shop’s Fair Trade Holiday Party. Sample fair trade chocolate and fair trade wines, and 20% of anything you purchase will be donated to the Chicago Fair Trade organization. 5–8pm. 746 N LaSalle (www.greenheartshop.org).

Gotta go see a man about a dog? At The Redhead Piano Bar’s Spirit, a monthly whiskey tasting series, you can pick out a new favorite dog. Breeds include single malt/blended scotch, straight whiskey and blended whiskey. 9pm. 16 W Ontario St (312-640-1000).

    WEDNESDAY

Slow Food Chicago hosts their Holiday Potluck Supper at the historic Residents’ Dining Hall at the Jane Adams Hull-House Museum. Bring a dish or a bottle of wine and jump into the celebration. In case you’re wondering, anything prepared in the microwave or from a box will probably be frowned upon. $5 members ($10 non-members). 6–9pm. 800 S Halsted St (www.slowfoodchicago.org).

Hey Janes, looking to beat your gums with some fellow birds? Translation: It’s ladies night. DOC Wine Bar’s girls night out will feature complimentary manicurists and massage therapists. It’ll be the cat’s meow. 7–10pm. 2602 North Clark St (773-883-5101).

    THURSDAY

The Melting Pot hosts a Holiday Wine Tasting for Charity event, promising a night full of wine, fondues and chocolates. And if that’s not reason enough to attend, you’ll sleep better knowing the proceeds go to PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) for the prevention of homelessness. $40. 6–8pm. 609 N Dearborn St (For more information, e-mail paula at winesforhumanity.com).

    FRIDAY

What better place to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of Prohibition than at Moonshine? Come to the Repeal Day Party dressed as a flapper or gangster to swing and drink the night away; just don’t end up a rummy. 5–8pm. 1824 W Division St (773-862-8686).

    SATURDAY

Get into the holiday spirit German style at the Stollen Fest celebration at Café Selmarie. Plenty of stollen samples will be available along with trivia and the chance to be crowned honorary stollen ambassador. And since the Lincoln Square Christkindl Market is also this weekend, it will be a double whammy. 8am–10pm. 4729 N Lincoln Ave (www.cafeselmarie.com).

Connie’s Pizza has always seemed pretty straightforward, but just in case you were kept up at night pondering, catch the Connie’s Pizza Demystified tour and tasting. The behind-the-scenes tour will be led by manager Vince Di Vincenzo. Reservations required $12. 10am. 2373 S Archer (847-432-8255).

    SUNDAY

The annual Holiday Candlelight Concert series begins at Pops For Champagne today. Guests can sip on champagne or order from the full menu while enjoying some jazz. A perfect low-key end to the weekend. $12. 6–9pm. 601 N State St (312-266-7677).
