Stories like this one about Highland Park parents who are mad about their underage-imbibing kids getting in trouble with the cops aren’t that uncommon. So much so that I’m wondering when the Trib will start doing stories on the dangers of parental irresponsibility that rival the three-alarm warning bells it sounded when it ran those teen driving stories a while back. It’s only fair, right?
Here are five things to do today:
COMEDY - TJ & Dave
Two-man improv in this town typically means one thing: Repetitive scenes. Why is it that smaller casts seem to beget watered-down character work and little scenic investment on the actors’ parts? TJ Jagodowski and Dave Pasquesi, though, dial their improv way up to almost-magically create a compelling show out of absolutely nothing. 11pm. iO Cabaret, 3541 N Clark St between Cornelia and Eddy Sts (773-880-0199). El: Red to Addison. Bus: 22 Clark (24hrs), 152 Addison. $5.
FILM - Trouble in Paradise
The “Lubitsch touch” is a description of a certain light-as-air elegance crossed with saucy European sophistication. See the perfect example in Ernst Lubitsch’s Trouble in Paradise, a charming comedy about a couple of con artists who go after a rich heiress. 6pm. Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N State St at Randolph St (312-846-2600). El: Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple (rush hrs) to State/Lake; Red to Lake; Blue to Clark/Lake. $9, students $7, members $5.
GAY & LESBIAN - 4 Women Only
Aussie rocker Martine Locke is the featured artist in this new series geared toward women. 10pm. Uncommon Ground Devon, 1401 W Devon Ave at Glenwood Ave (773-465-9801). El: Red to Morse. Bus: 36, Broadway, 155 Devon. $5-$10 donation.
MUSIC - Jamie Lidell
Lidell’s Jim (Warp) marks another surprise development for the electronic artist–turned–unlikely soul singer: It swaps studio trickery with an organic emulation of Motown and Otis Redding. The Jamiroquai-for-hipsters is fast becoming the next, well, Jamiroquai, but in concert the salesman, seducer and comedian in Lidell pours forth. 9pm. Metro, 3730 N Clark St, between Waveland and Racine Aves, Lakeview/Roscoe Village/Wrigleyville, Chicago (773-549-0203) $22
SPAS, FITNESS & HEALTH - Bellydance workshop
If Mike Myers could make his belly dance in Wayne’s World, surely you can move your hips, too. Get in the, er, swing of things during this 90-minute bellydancing workshop where choreographer Taj will help you tap into the rhythm of your body and develop self-awareness. 6–8pm. Allyu, 600 W Chicago Ave at Larrabee St (312-755-1313, allyuspa.com). El: Brown, Purple (rush hrs) to Chicago. Bus: 8 Halsted, 66 (24hrs) Chicago.
