As the presidential campaign moves into its final weeks, I’m really hoping we hear more from two of America’s most neglected Joes: G.I. Joe and Joe Blow. Also: Joe Mama.
Here are five things to do today:
ART & DESIGN - Artists at Work Forum: Making Art, Making Change
Salem Collo-Julin of Mess Hall and Temporary Services moderates a conversation about the collision of art and activism with local subversives Aay Preston-Myint, Laurie Jo Reynolds, Sarah Ross and Zena Sakowski. 6–7:30pm. Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E Randolph St at Michigan Ave (312-744-6630, chicagoculturalcenter.org). El: Red to Lake; Orange, Pink, Green, Brown, Purple (rush hrs) to Randolph. Bus: 3, X3, 4 (24hrs), X4, 6, 10, 14, 26, 143, 144, 145, 146, 147, 151 (24hrs), 157. Metra: Elec Main to Millennium Station. FREE!
BOOKS - Tom Wolfe
The natty author of the latest One Book, One Chicago pick, The Right Stuff, sits down to chat with Carol Marin about the book, the space program that inspired it, and his long, diverse career. Reservations are required. Call 312-747-1194. 6pm. Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S State St at Van Buren St (312-747-4300). El: Orange, Brown, Pink, Purple (rush hrs) to Library; Red, Blue to Jackson. Metra: Elec Main to Van Buren St. FREE!
CLUBS - Fly By Night
Fader magazine writer and Fool’s Gold label honcho Nick Catchdubs headlines with stupid fresh beats. Starter DJs, Willy Joy and apcom get in on the action, too. 10pm. Debonair Social Club, 1575 N Milwaukee Ave. (773-227-7990, debonairsocialclub.com). El: Blue to Damen. Bus: 50, 56, 72. $5, $10 for 18 and up.
FILM - Joanie 4 Jackie: The Lady Glitterati of the New Movie Uprising
Miranda July’s creative game of video telephone—in which women filmmakers add their short contribution to a videotape and then send it to another filmmaker—is a heck of a way to circumvent the challenges of seeing short films by women. The Siskel is screening a cool selection of these filmmakers’ work in Joanie 4 Jackie: The Lady Glitterati of the New Movie Uprising. 6pm. Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N State St at Randolph St (312-846-2600). El: Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple (rush hrs) to State/Lake; Red to Lake; Blue to Clark/Lake. $9, students $7, members $5.
MUSEUMS & CULTURE - Chicago Hauntings Ghost Tour
You won’t see this bus route on the CTA map, and it’s a lot more fun than the 22 Clark. On these eye-opening trips, noted historian, author and parapsychology enthusiast Ursula Bielski and her staff of equally knowledgeable ghost guides show specter-seeking guests about 30 haunted spots in the Chicago area. You’ll see the sites and hear the stories behind Cabrini-Green’s Candy Man, the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, the Iroquois Theatre’s “Death Alley” and the devil of Hull House. On the lighter side, the tour makes a beer and burger stop at the Billy Goat Tavern, where you’ll hear about Billy “Goat” Sianis and the origins of the Cubs’ curse. 7–9:30pm. Meet at Clark and Ontario Sts (888-446-7891). El: Red to Grand. Bus: 22 (24hrs), 65, 125. $28, kids ages 8–12 $20.
SHOPPING & STYLE - Koros
Does fashion have high turnover or what? Koros is already discounting fall merch from 15–20% in celebration of its third birthday and new location, just doors away from its former. Sip cocktails and dine on hors d’oeuvres while experiencing the new space. 6–9pm. Koros, 1039 W Lake St at Carpenter St (312-738-0155). El: Green, Pink to Ashland.
