Slow week here in the world of concert announcements because of the Labor Day holiday, but here we go:
In his amazing über-emo tribute to his influences, "Heart Songs," on the new Weezer record, Rivers Cuomo sings, "Gordon Lightfoot…and Joan Baez / I never listened to too much jazz / but hippie songs could be heard in our pad." Cut to a couple months later—Joan Baez is hitting the road, as well as Gordon Lightfoot. Coincidence? Yeah, probably. You can now hear her "hippie songs" in your "pad," assuming your pad is the Symphony Center. She’ll hit the venue on November 11.
Baez has quietly cut folk records for decades, while never getting the mainstream revivalism-love of her ex-BF, Dylan. In September, Razor & Tie releases Baez’s thirtysomethingth album, Day After Tomorrow. It’s a covers record, heavy on the Steve Earle, with a little Waits and Elvis Costello thrown in. Tickets are on sale now.
Local boogie rockers Catfish Haven release a new record this fall, Devastator. The press release confirms that the title is a nod to classic crossover pop-cock-rock albums like Destroyer and Eliminator. When I first heard it in the office, my jaw hit the floor. And not necessarily in a good way. If the world wanted this much sports-bar grunge, Candlebox would get back together and drop a new Billboard-charting album. Wait, that actually just happened this summer? Catfish Haven are gonna be HUUUUuuuuge. Chicago was "the next Seattle" back in the day, who knew it might come true over a decade later?
The Haven hit Metro on October 11. Tickets go on sale this Saturday.
