There are people who work over Labor Day weekend so that the rest of us don’t have to mix our own drinks, let alone cook. Here are a few ways to spend the long weekend.
SUNDAY 31
SmallBar on Division turns four today, and they’re celebrating as all toddlers do: with an all-you-can-eat pig roast, craft beers (like Three Floyds and Two Brothers), a kissing booth, a dunk tank and a cream pie toss. It’s free to get in, but donations for beer and pork will be requested. 3–7pm. Gateway Auto parking lot, 2057 W Division St (773-772-2727). Free admission.
Taste what’s new in the cheese department at Taste Food and Wine’s Cheesy Sundays. Noon–5pm. 1506 Jarvis Ave (773-761-3633). Free.
Not that people aren’t packing into Martini Park on an average Sunday night, but the River North hotspot is throwing a Labor Day party—i.e., complimentary appetizers—tonight anyway. 6–8pm. 151 W Erie St (312-640-0577). No cover.
MONDAY 1
Do something for the kids: $10 worth of school supplies (which will be donated to kids in need) buys an afternoon of hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill at the Labor Day Barbeque and School Supply Drive at Fizz Bar & Grill. Drinks, however, are not included. 2–8pm. 3220 N Lincoln Ave (773-348-6000).
Drink killer bloody marys and mimosas (alongside an omelet or something—but that’s not the point here) on the patio at D.O.C. Wine Bar’s Labor Day brunch. 10am–3pm. 2602 N Clark St (773-883-5101). Average main course: $9.
Mmm, martinis. I am so ready for the weekend. In Fine Spirits stays open on Labor Day to offer its limited-time gin menu featuring a gin-and-tonic sampler and a tasting flight of North Shore gins. 4pm–midnight. 5420 N Clark St (773-334-9463). Average flight: $13.
Okay, taking a cooking class is a little bit like work…but it won’t feel like it when you’re grilling stuffed blue-cheese burgers and strawberry shortcakes (yup, that goes on the barbeque, too) on the patio at the Chopping Block’s Labor Day Backyard BBQ. Noon–2:30pm. 4747 N Lincoln Ave (773-472-6700). $50.
