With most people calling Friday the best day of the Lolla’s weekend, crowds are lined up for blocks to get in to the main gates. And since tickets for today are sold out (Saturday and Sunday tickets are still available at the Lolla box office on Columbus), I’ve seen lots of people walking around with arms in the air, fingers extended indicating one or two tickets needed.
Sweat-soaked shirts and bikini tops are the rule here, and how much the heat affects the day remains to be seen. The longest lines aren’t for beer, they’re at the water fountains. The crowds of people surrounding them are so big I half-expected to see someone selling bootleg Cat Power nude pics or something.
The other long lines are at the AT&T tent, where a poll about who will put on the best show has G. Love and Special Sauce and The Raconteurs at 47%. Wilco is at a measly 9% but probably because all their fans were at the Kidsapalooza tent to see Jeff Tweedy.
Speaking of bootleg nudes, the weirdest piece of flyerazzi I’ve seen so far is a plastic card with the Lolla logo at the top and a picture of "Bunny Love" and "Air Force Amy" from HBO’s Cathouse show. I’m fairly certain this isn’t a Lolla-approved ad: "Party in the park or party in your pants," it says, with some email addresses for more info. If they were offering ice packs, I’d seek out the nearest WiFi connection.
So far, the people who seem to be having the most fun are at Perry’s (Lolla always has been tied to a certain cult of personality). Perhaps that’s due to the shade, and the surprisingly cool DJ tent. Despite the 90-degree temps, Noah & The Whale are entertaining a packed crowd of jumping, dancing, nodding kids in their 20s. Some have even whipped out hula hoops, along with the obligatory Hacky Sack.
