Now I know why broadcast news ratings are down: You don’t cover the things people want to see. Granted the idea of "news" is suspect when it comes to conventions (which are theater more than anything else) but why wouldn’t you cover former President Bill Clinton’s convention speech? People would eat it up. Just saying.
Here are five things to do today:
FILM - Broken Lullaby (The Man I Killed)
If you think of Ernst Lubitsch at all (which you should at least once a week for improved prostate health, according to the AMA), you no doubt think of him as the king of elegant 1930s comedy with a sophisticated twist. Well, even he went serious sometimes, as he does in earnest drama Broken Lullaby (The Man I Killed), about a soldier who feels he must apologize to the family of someone he killed in the war. 8pm. Doc Films, University of Chicago, 1212 E 59th St between Kimbark and Woodlawn Aves (773-702-8574). Metra: Elec Main to 59th St. Bus: 4 (24hrs), X4, 14, 28, 59, 171. $4.
GAY & LESBIAN - Nico Muhly
Classical and non-classical music listeners can appreciate out composer Muhly’s impish charms and indie sensibilities. 8pm. Lakeshore Theater, 3175 N Broadway between Briar Pl and Belmont Ave (773-472-3492). El: Red, Brown, Purple (rush hrs) to Belmont. Bus: 36 Broadway, 77 Belmont (24hrs). $15.
MUSEUMS & CULTURE - Re-Enact ’68 Grant Park
It’s been four decades since the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago erupted in violent clashes between protesters and police (read our feature "Chicago protests" for more). On its anniversary, a few local activists have planned a historic reenactment to raise questions about what has changed since then, and more important, what has stayed the same. Expect speeches, costumes, period props and a few dead celebrity appearances from the class of ’68. Organizers promise the event will be a family-friendly affair with live music, food, costumes and—we’re guessing—no teargas. Grant Park, 5pm. 700 S Michigan Ave at Balbo Dr (1968redux@gmail.com). El: Red to Harrison. Bus: 1, 2, 3, 4 (24hrs), 6, 10, 14, 26, 28, 146. FREE!
SHOPPING & STYLE - Koros
Although things seem to be really heating up in the West Loop (thanks to hot restaurant Sepia and the new Maria Pinto boutique), trendy shop Koros might be leaving the ‘hood. The store has recently announced that it’s moving, but has yet to disclose where the new location will be. In meantime, stop by its orginal digs for an “everything must go” moving sale, which includes spring and summer clearance items. 6–9pm. Koros, 1019 W Lake St between Carpenter and Morgan Sts (312-738-0155, korosartandstyle.com). El: Green to Clinton. Bus: 8, 20, 56, 65.
THEATER - The Terrible Head
Mythic Proportions’ Andrew Boyer adapts the myth of Perseus (he’s the one who slew Medusa) as a dance play. Check out video previews at mythicproportionstheatre.org. 7:30pm. Mythic Proportions Theatre at National Pastime Theater, 4139 N Broadway at Gordon Terr (773-327-7077). El: Red to Sheridan. Bus: 36 Broadway, 151 Sheridan (24hrs). $15–$25.
