Is it just me or is Beloit’s mindset list kinda lame this year? And also mildly inaccurate? "WWW has never stood for World Wide Wrestling." Did anyone ever think that? Perhaps they’re thinking of WWF, which later became WWE when the wildlife federation folks were no longer interested in being confused with smelling what The Rock’s been cooking? And as much as I’d prefer to live in a world where soft drink refills are always free, it’s just not the case (Tony’s Burrito Mex on Belmont and Damen, I’m looking at you).
By the way, all the pictures from this year’s photo issue are now online. Feel free to kill an hour before lunch with the photo gallery of reader-submitted photos.
Here are five things to do today:
COMEDY- Harold
There’s the Harold, iO’s signature long-form improv show, and there’s the free Harold. The difference is only wallet-deep; plus, the Wednesday Harold slots is occupied by Carl and the Passions, one of the theater’s best. 8pm. iO Del Close Theater, 3541 N Clark St between Cornelia and Eddy Sts (773-880-0199). El: Red to Addison. Bus: 22 Clark (24hrs), 152 Addison. Free.
FILM - Dames
If you’re itching to play hooky today, may we recommend the crazy Busby Berkeley musical Dames? It’s got Zasu Pitts! What? That doesn’t excite you? It should; she’s hilarious. 1:30pm. Portage Theater, 4050 N Milwaukee Ave at Irving Park Rd (773-736-4050). Bus: 54 Cicero, 80 Irving Park. $4.
MUSIC - UB40 + Maxi Priest
UB40 is still best known for its fluke American success. The group’s cover of Neil Diamond’s “Red, Red Wine,” a huge hit several years after its initial release, got the band branded as little more than an opportunistic cover band. Nevertheless, with 30 years of experience under its belt, the venerable Birmingham, U.K., reggae act knows how to entertain. Fellow Brit Maxi Priest joins the band and opens. 8pm. Ravinia Pavilion, 418 Sheridan Rd, Highland Park, IL (847-266-5100) $45, lawn $20.
SPORTS & REC - Ladies Sports Clubs: Baseball
Bennett Oberfeld, a man who has visited more than his fair share of great ballparks, leads this latest installment in Junior’s regular series that hopes to introduce the wide world of sports to the fairer sex. He’ll break down the major league parks for an insider’s look at the best of the best. Know that your entrance fee gets you grazing rights at the buffet and (predictably playing to the stereotypes) Cosmos or Miller 64s as well as a chance to win tickets to an upcoming Sox or Cubs game. 7–9pm. Junior’s Sports Lounge, 724 W Maxwell St at Union Ave (773-276-7582). El: Blue to UIC-Halsted. Bus: 8, 12, 127. $25.
THEATER - Weekend
Gore Vidal’s 1968 comedy, about a Republican presidential candidate whose son becomes a political liability, gets a belated but timely Chicago premiere. Catch a low-priced preview before Saturday’s opening. 8pm. TimeLine Theatre Company, 615 W Wellington Ave at Broadway (773-281-8463). Bus: 8, 22 (24hrs), 36. $15.
