Not really. But after finally tasting Red Mango’s frozen yogurt the other day (at right), I can’t stop thinking about how great it would be to have it within a short stroll from work. The Korean fro-yo chain (which opened its first store in 2002 and claims to have been the inspiration for its rival Pinkberry) picked Evanston as their Chicagoland testing ground, then opened in Naperville right after, but there currently aren’t any locations in the city proper. Fine. If we pile up a dozen staffers in one house, Real World–style, I’m sure we can cover the mortgage of one of those fancy Evanston Queen Anne homes.
True, we have Wow Bao, Berry Chill, etc., in the city, all of which I tried for a frozen yogurt round-up in May, but Red Mango beats the pants off the competition. There’s a true yogurt tang, not a citric acid–induced pucker that makes you think you’re eating lemon ice cream. There’s a clean, refreshing sweetness that’s the antithesis of cloying and leaves zero aftertaste. And best of all: the texture. Freezing yogurt is harder than it sounds, and many spots suffer from graininess or even iciness. Red Mango’s yogurt is smooth as silk, but not scary-slick like DQ soft-serve.
I could go on, but really I need to get back to helping the intern amass signatures to petition the company to open in Chicago. State and Jackson. 17th floor. A Red Mango spokeswoman says CEO Daniel Kim’s recent visit to Chicago was spent checking out sites within city limits to eventually set up shop, so it’s not that far fetched.
