This week’s featured shot from the TOC Flickr photo group comes to us from kneejerky. I have declared this weekend to be All Fun, No Drudgery and this sign perfectly reflects that. Sleep in, enjoy the weather, let yourself be lazy, drink Old Style.
Here are some things to do this weekend:
FRIDAY
ART & DESIGN - Spring Thing
The Greenleaf Art Center opens its artists’ studios to the public in conjunction with its group show. 1–5pm. Greenleaf Art Center, 1806 W Greenleaf Ave at Ravenswood Ave (773-465-4652, greenleafartcenter.com). Bus: 22 Clark. Metra: Union Pacific to Rogers Park. FREE!
DANCE - Aloft: Dinner of our Discontent
Think Cirque du Soleil, but on a local level—breathtaking aerial dance with a gritty, handmade feel. In Dinner of our Discontent, Shayna Swanson and her crew play out a tragicomic family drama by swinging around on giant lamp shades and using everyday objects to create stage magic. This may be your last chance to “hang out” (haha) in the current Aloft digs on California Ave: The troupe is soon moving its school and workspace to the Fulton-Carroll center. 8pm. Aloft Loft, 941 N California Ave between Augusta Blvd and Chicago Ave (800-838-3006, brownpapertickets.com). El: Blue to California. Bus: 52, 66, 70. $20–$30.
MUSEUMS & CULTURE - “Dirty” Wine Dinner
A four-course meal, Naked Winery wine pairings and a Vegas-themed burlesque show by the Flaming Dames might sound like pure indulgence, but it’s a weekly reality at the Spot. 7:30pm. The Spot, 4437 N Broadway between Montrose and Wilson Aves (773-728-8934). El: Red to Wilson. Bus: 36 Broadway, 78 Montrose. $50.
SHOPPING & STYLE - Carolina Herrera personal appearance
Wanna sneak a peek at fashion royalty? Pop into Saks, where this famed designer (she dressed Jackie O. during the last twelve years of her life, for crying out loud!) is stopping by to celebrate and show off her fall 2008 collection. Expect the line to keep with Herrera’s tradition of designing sleek and glamorous evening dresses and gowns. 4pm. Saks Fifth Avenue, 700 N Michigan Ave at Huron St (312-944-6500, saksfifthavenue.com). El: Red to Chicago. Bus: 3, X3, 4 (24hrs), x4, 10, 26, 143, 144, 145, 146, 147, 151 (24hrs).
THEATER - The Strangerer
Mickle Maher’s wonderfully weird satire of the 2004 Bush-Kerry presidential debates—a pairing not likely to attain the household historical significance of Lincoln-Douglas or Kennedy-Nixon—is inspired by Bush’s claim to be reading Camus. The production’s just been extended through June 29. 8pm. Theater Oobleck at Chopin Theatre, 1543 W Division St at Milwaukee Ave (773-347-1041). El: Blue to Division. Bus: 9 (24hrs), 56, 70. $10.
SATURDAY
ART & DESIGN - The Vega Caucus
Roxane Hopper and Julie Rudder kick off their second season with works by Kirsten Leenaars, Caleb Lyons, Tim Mazurek, Cole Pierce, Katie Scanlan and many other artists. 7–10pm. Vega Estates, 716 W 16th St (773-852-9665, vegaestatespresents.com). Bus: 8 Halsted. FREE!
DANCE - Essence of Mexico
The long-established Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago shows off traditional dances with dashes of modern style; the popular Emmy-nominated local band Sones de Mexico Ensemble keeps the tempo lively. 7pm. Victory Gardens Theater at the Biograph, 2433 N Lincoln Ave between Fullerton Ave and Montana St (773-871-3000). El: Red, Brown, Purple (rush hrs) to Fullerton. Bus: 8, 11, 74. $40.
MUSIC - Subtle + Pit er Pat at Empty Bottle
Subtle’s loopy fusion of hip-hop, indie-pop and trance psychedelic mashes commercial sounds into a Frankenstein’s monster that’s far from radio fodder. While Pit er Pat’s 2005 disc Shakey was a charming hodgepodge of oddly interweaving bass and drum syncopations that provided supple support for Fay Davis-Jeffers’s sweetly atonal vocals and skittering keyboard lines, it was, in the end, a one-trick pony—Pit er Pat simply did what it did and did it well. There’s more of the same on the band’s Pyramids, but it’s also a deeper, better disc, with soundscape detours and experimental stretches. 10pm. Empty Bottle: 1035 N Western Ave at Cortez St (773-276-3600). Bus: 49 Western (24hrs), 70 Division. $12.
SPAS & GYMS - Self Workout in the Park
Self magazine presents the newest workout fads at this extravaganza of exercise. Test out Camp Crunch (a military-style boot camp), Million Dollar Knockout (boxing training targeted for and taught by women) and BLT (a butt, legs and thighs workout). Those who aren’t big on breaking a sweat can enjoy free beauty, health and nutrition products. Proceeds benefit Fertile Hope, cancerandcareers.org and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Meet in Grove #2 off LaSalle St. For information and tickets, visit selfworkoutinthepark.com. 11am–3pm. Lincoln Park, 2400 E Fullerton Ave at Cannon Dr (312-742-7529, chicagoparkdistrict.com). $20 in advance; $25 at the event.
SPORTS & REC - Monsters of the Midway Criterium
The University of Chicago Velo Club sponsors this all-day series of races around the Midway Plaisance. Racing gets under way at 7:30am with a juniors heat, and continues until about 4:30pm, when simple spoke folk take to the street. This event is part of the American Bicycle Racing’s tour of Illinois/Wisconsin. 7:30am–5pm. Midway Plaisance, 60th St between Cottage Grove Ave and Stony Island Ave (ucvc.uchicago.edu/monsters2008/monsters2008.html). Bus: 2, 4 (24hrs), 6, 170, 171, 172. $25, kids ages 18 and under $10. Free for spectators.
SUNDAY
DANCE - Arabesque Belly Dance: SandSwept!
It don’t matter how big it is, baby. It matters if you know how to shake it. See how well these adepts of Middle Eastern dance can undulate, articulate and fascinate with their hips and other parts. Student Showcase 7pm. Martyrs’, 3855 N Lincoln Ave at Berenice Ave (773-742-5250). El: Brown to Addison. Bus: 11 Lincoln, 50 Damen. $15.
MUSEUMS & CULTURE - Tour de Treats
In this unconventional bike ride, race around town to fill up on sugary concoctions from local dessert and candy shops—and get an earful of neighborhood history along the way. For three hours, ingest carbs at Sarah’s Candies, Sweet Mandy B’s, Garrett’s World Famous Popcorn and other sweet purveyors. Bikes and helmets are included. 1:30–4:30pm. Bobby’s Bike Hike, 465 N McClurg Ct (312-915-0995, BobbysBikeHike.com). Bus: 29, 65, 66 (24hrs), 124. $40, students and kids $30.
SHOPPING & STYLE - Treasure Hunt
We’re always looking for luxury, especially when it comes deeply discounted. This weekend’s event at the Merchandise Mart offers 75% off more than 2,000 items that are typically only available to design pros. That means items like Filsinger’s Guillory armchair goes from $2,665 to $650, and Betty M’s Astoria dining table drops from $7,774 to $3,500. There are plenty of treasures to go around at this hunt, as long as you’re willing to spend a few gold coins. 11am–5pm. Merchandise Mart, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza between Wells and Orleans Sts (800-677-6278). El: Brown, Purple (rush hrs) to Merchandise Mart. Bus: 11 Lincoln, 125 Water Tower Ex.; $10 weekend pass.
SPORTS & REC - American Cancer Society Walk & Roll
Since cancer is one of the leading killers in the States, and since organizers are asking you to walk, skate or bike ride to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, there’s next to no reason you shouldn’t get off your dupa and do your part. Start at Balbo and Columbus Drives and choose the 5-mile walk, 10-mile skate or 15-mile bike ride along the lakefront. Even Fido can join the fun as leashed dogs are allowed. 9:30am. Lower Hutchinson Field, Columbus Dr between Balbo Dr and Roosevelt Rd (312-279-7261, walkroll.org). El: Red to Harrison. Bus: 3, 4 (24hrs), 6, 14, 146. Donations are encouraged.
THEATER - The Last Days of Judas Iscariot
Stephen Adly Guirgis’s urban religious fantasia, imagining a Purgatory-set retrial of Jesus’s betrayer, is marked by terrific acting in this Gift Theatre production, which closes its already-extended run today. 2:30pm. The Gift Theatre, 4802 N Milwaukee Ave at Lawrence Ave (773-283-7071). El: Blue to Jefferson Park. Bus: 56 Milwaukee, 81 Lawrence (24hrs). $20–$25, students and seniors $15.
