    Mother’s Day brunch specials

Posted in Restaurants and bars by Melanie Moss on May 8th, 2008 at 1:27 pm

It’s that time of year to pay Mom back for the countless PB&Js stuffed into brown bags with your name on it as a kid. Here’s your chance to give her, and you, a taste of what’s cooking this spring.

    Brasserie Jo
Nothing woos mom like brunch from chef Jean Joho. Bistro faves for madame include crab cake in brioche with frisee ($15.95); grilled lemon chicken paillard ($18.95) and steak frites with mustard butter ($19.95). Classic French desserts like chocolate mousse, profiteroles, banana caramel coupe and floating island should satisfy mom’s sweet tooth. 11am-2:30pm. 59 W Hubbard St (312-595-0800).

    Citizen Bar
Think mom will complain that the “bottomless” mimosa gets a cap of three? How about if moms get a 50% discount? Sweets include amaretto french toast with whipped mascarpone ($8); and waffles with organic honey-butter, toasted almonds and gelato ($7). Go for savory specials like herbed chicken salad with goat cheese and basil vinaigrette ($9) or hit up the make-your-own frittata station ($8). 11am-3pm. 364 W Erie St (312-640-1156).

    May Street Market
Whether mom goes for a bloody mary or a cranberry-grapefruit spritzer, it’ll be just the thing to wash down an intro buffet of pastries, fruit, yogurt and cheese. Save room for brunch plates like yellow corn veloute with parmesan flan and corn madeleines; Maine lobster ravioli; and grilled Moroccan-spiced beef tenderloin. Finish up with red velvet cake with red beet ice cream, while kids keep busy with blueberry pancakes and mini cupcakes. 10am-3pm. 1132 W Grand Ave (312-421-5547). 5 and under, Free; Kids 6-12, $16; Adults, $50.

    Café Ba-Ba-Reeba!
Get spicy with “tapas for mamas,” a bloody mary bar and cava cocktails. Tapas get moved up to the day shift with breakfast twists like crepes with goat cheese, membrillo, dates and walnuts; baked eggs with chorizo hash; “eggpanada” with chistora and manchego; and a tapas-sized waffle with bananas and cream. 10am-3pm. 2024 N Halsted St (773-935-5000).

    Ritz-Carlton’s Greenhouse
All moms deserve a little bit of Ritz. Pack plates with the raw bar’s fresh stone crab claws, gulf shrimp and oysters with bloody mary shooters. A carving station satiates the turf-loving. Don’t let mom miss the lavender crème brulee or the chance to win a “Girls Will Be Girls” weekend package. Seatings at 10am, 1pm and 4pm. 160 E Pearson St (312-573-5223). Kids 5-12, $25; Adults, $90.

    10 Pin
Slip on your bowling shoes and work up an appetite for mom’s brunch. Breakfast faves include smoked salmon and bagels and french toast stuffed with Bailey’s cream cheese. Go retro with green bean casserole, sweet potatoes and roast turkey with gravy. Get mom up for round two with a “Momtini.” Seatings at 11am, 2pm. 330 N State St (312-644-0300). Kids 4 and under, free; Adults, $36.

    Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse
A four-course menu with paired wines includes tomato basil bisque with chardonnay; smoked salmon bruschetta with sauvignon blanc; roasted duck with pomegranate glaze matched up with riesling; and potato-crusted salmon paired with Puglian amano. Moms get complimentary chocolate-dipped strawberries, but save room for pine nut torte with apricot compote. 4-10pm. 33 W Kinzie St (312-828-0966). $49.95 without wine pairings; $69.95 with..

    Quince
Start off with croissants and muffins to go with pastry chef Jeffrey Sills’ house-made jams but don’t fill up before chef Mark Hannon’s shaved asparagus salad with truffle vinaigrette; short rib sandwich with truffle fries; and crème brulee with lingonberry jam. 9:30am-3pm. 1625 Hinman Ave, Evanston (847-570-8400). Kids, $15. Adults, $40.

    Room 21

Amuse Mom with Capone stories at this supposed former mob warehouse while you both dig in to brunch specials like grilled chicken sandwich with caramelized onions and gruyere ($11), seared salmon salad ($13) and brown butter trout with capers and parsley ($15). Dine al fresco, weather permitting, and get sipping on white peach mint juleps ($12) or pomegranate mojitos ($13). Noon-6pm. 2110 S Wabash Ave (312-328-1198).

    Tsuki
Roll in the maki for mom with a menu that gets the lady of the hour a complimentary signature maki, dessert and sparkling sake. 5-11pm. 1441-1443 W Fullerton Ave (773-883-8722).

    Ai
Following up sushi with chocolate may be pretty progressive for Ma, but hey, it’s free. (Each table that drops ten bucks gets a box of French-Asian chocolates.) Sounds like you’ll be busy in the cab ride home. 5-11:30pm. 358 W Ontario St (312-335-9888).

    SushiSamba Rio
Both the family-style Brazilian eats and live jazz band should get mom up to samba. Choose three brunch specials like shrimp frittata with asparagus, hearts of palm and manchego; a smoked salmon platter; and doughnut pancakes with roasted pineapple-vanilla syrup. 11am-3pm. 504 N Wells St (312-595-2300). Kids, $15. Adults, $35.

    Takashi
Give mom a slice of well-earned zen with chef Takashi Yagihashi’s brunch menu. Three-courses lets you pick from appetizers like house-smoked Norwegian mackerel with potato pancakes, English pea soup with peekytoe crab fondue or sautéed shrimp with soba gnocchi. Move on to mains like pork loin with soy-ginger sauce and tofu stack with leeks, fava beans and black trumpet mushrooms. Sweeten up with desserts like warm pear financiers with kumquat marmalade, blue cheese, walnuts and honey-vanilla ice cream. 11am-2:30. 1952 N Damen Ave (773-772-6170). $36.

Mrs. Murphy and Sons Irish Bistro
Freckled, redheaded Moms likely won’t turn down Emerald Isle brunch staples like bangers, beans and black pudding. A chocolate fountain and champagne cocktails should get the ladies up for a jig. 10am-3pm. 3905 N Lincoln Ave (773-248-3905). Kids, $9.95. Adults (without drinks), $19.95.

    Le Lan
Kick off Mom’s day with French-Asian flavors from chef Bill Kim’s three-course brunch menu. Pick from apps like Thai coconut soup with olive oil-poached shrimp or wild mushroom and chicken dumplings. Mains include an Asian twist on bouillabaisse with a chili-lime broth. Fans of Argyle bubble tea can’t miss chef Kim’s pineapple-mango version that totes a coconut wafer. 11:30am-2pm. 749 N Clark St (312-280-9100). $45.

    Café 103
Head south for “high tea,” on Saturday, May 11th. It’s pinkies up with Variety of Republic and Intelligentsia pours to go with scones, curds and other mini munchies. 11am-1:30pm. 1909 W 103rd St (773-238-5115). $30.

The Signature Room at the 95th
Bring mama up to the top with a buffet that scrolls around the city’s skyline. Make pit stops at the carving station for honey-glazed ham, grab oysters at the raw bar, and squeeze in mascarpone-stuffed french toast. Save room for caramel profiteroles, or just finish up by sneaking in tater tots from the kids’ buffet. 10am-7pm. 875 N Michigan Ave (312-787-9596). 3 and under, Free; Kids 4-12, $25; Adults, $58.

    David Burke’s Primehouse
Work your way through 25 different dim sum as the cart rolls by. Or go for Burke classics like sesame crab balls, ham and cheese strudel and steak au poivre. Kids’ cravings get taken care of with mac n’ cheese, fried drumsticks and mini sundaes. Moms get a free fortune doughnut, some holding gift certificates to The James’ spa. 616 N Rush St (312-660-6000). 5 and under, Free; Kids 6-12, $16; Adults, $35.

    Lux Bar
Head up to the second floor to pile up a plate with buffet faves. Think omelets, croissants, roasted salmon and honey-roasted ham. Kids fill up on chicken fingers and grilled cheese. 18 E Bellevue Pl (312-642-3400). Adults, $24.50; Kids 10 and under, $14.95.

    Blue Water Grill
Let mom peruse brunch and dinner specials that have spring written all over them. During brunch, try lobster with baby artichokes and prosciutto frittata; tea-smoked salmon omelet with caviar and crème fraiche; creamed morels with ramps and poached organic egg; and fried soft shell crab sandwiches on house-made brioche. Dinner specials include sautéed softshell crabs with pickled ramps salad; grilled diver scallops with morels; and potato gnocchi with asparagus. Strawberry shortcake makes a sweet finish any time of day. 520 N Dearborn (312-777-1400).

    The Music Box Theatre
Wipe the mothballs off those shoulder pads and arrive Joan Crawford-style for a viewing of Mommie Dearest. Splurge for a VIM (Very Important Mother) ticket to score eats from Violet, a Southport brunch spot. 2:30pm. 3733 N Southport Ave (773-327-0234), (www.ticketweb.com). $12; VIM ticket, $20.

    Marigold
A Mother’s Day thali platter gets Mom a spread of traditional Indian brunch bites. Wash down the spice with a complimentary mango mimosa. Noon-8pm. 4832 N Broadway (773-293-4653).

    Dine
This buffet has retro classics that are sure to please old-school Moms. Try chicken wellington, caesar salad with focaccia croutons, oysters “rockafella,” mac n’ cheese and meatloaf with brandy tomato sauce. 9:30am-4pm. 733 W Madison St (312-602-2100). 12 and under, $14.95; Adults, $39.

    Vermilion
If mom doesn’t dig scones n’ tea, maybe a six-course Indian/Latin seafood menu is more her thing. Think blue corn-crusted scallops, lobster ceviche and tamarind shrimp. It’s more than plain OJ with complimentary “herb & spice” champagne fizzes, in flavors like blueberry cardamom, jalapeno cilantro or prickly-pear ginger. Noon-3pm. 10 W Hubbard St (312-527-4060). $55.

    Sheffield’s
Moms who crave the ’cue for comfort can dig into brunch fare with a hard-to-beat price tag. She also gets a free mimosa or mary, as well as an on-site nail technician. Just the pampering that’s in order between courses. Noon. 3258 N Sheffield Ave (773-281-4989). $9.95.

Kitsch’n On Roscoe and Kitsch’n River North
Munch al fresco, and mom will sway in the breeze with her complimentary mimosa. Retro brunch faves include fried chicken n’ waffles ($9.99), coconut-crusted french toast ($8.99) and green eggs n’ ham ($7.99). Kitsch’n On Roscoe, 2005 W Roscoe (773-248-7372). Kitsch’n River North, 600 W Chicago Ave (312-644-1500).
