    Chicago magazine: hire this intern

Posted in Internet by Scott Smith on January 30th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

This month’s Chicago magazine has a cover story on "171 great Chicago websites" that’s a great resource for folks who haven’t already tricked out their RSS feeds with their own personal library of local sites (we’ve also got some recommendations here). I’ve already thumbed through the hard copy a couple times, but have been eagerly awaiting the online version so I can click right through to their recommended sites, and not have to manually type in 171 different Web addresses.

But like a schoolgirl eagerly hoping her potential prom date calls, I’ve been kept waiting…waiting…waiting by Chicago magazine. While other pieces from its February issue like its ode to the ‘burbs, the article about Chicago via Flickr, and David Bernstein’s deconstruction of a governorship gone wrong are getting their time in the online sun, the story remains offline, with only a tease that it’s "coming soon."

So I decided to do their work for them. Or rather, make our intern do it.

Alice Park is one of the many tireless TOC interns who toil away in our offices for nothing more than class credit and an occasional byline. She’s gone through the entire Chicago magazine piece, and linked to each website (organized according to category, just like they did). Because I am not an ogre, I didn’t make her re-type all their commentary. For that you’ll just have to keep refreshing this page, or spend the $4.99 down at the newsstand. But at least you won’t get carpal tunnel typing all these into Firefox.

And Chicago magazine: let me know if you want to take a gander at Alice’s resume. She does good work.

UPDATE: Fuzzy Gerdes at Metroblogging Chicago created a ready-for-your-newsreader OPML file of all of these sites that’s available here.

Hey, don’t blame us: It wasn’t in the Chicago magazine article. We were just the (re-)typists on this.

Let it be known that Alice is equally adept at researching obscure Diwali Festival foods and customs…

I found all the feeds and made the list into an OPML file for importing into a newsreader: http://chicago.metblogs.com/archives/2008/01/chicago_magazin_3.phtml

Thanks for putting this up. I had no idea that Chicago Magazine ran out of suburb stories and now they have moved onto internet stories. Thanks TOC for covering the city that is in the name of your magazine.

I’d throw in a vote for The Site of Big Shoulders at http://sobs.org.

Skillet Doux hasn’t been a Chicago food blog in months and months… Oh, Chicago Magazine. Why do you hurt me so.

How could you have a theater list and not put Albany Park Theater Project! it’s such a good cause.

Geez, all right already! Normally, we roll out the stories over the course of the month, but here you go—a week ahead of schedule:

Thanks, TOC, for using your resources to recognize a package we worked very hard on. Intern Alice Park, send along your résumé!
