Two brilliant shows I mistakenly listed as sold out in this week’s magazine are in fact not sold out. And, bye the bye, they happen to be damn good shows. So here’s a lil’ hope at corrections.
- Hip-Hop Live!: Ghostface, Rakim and Brother Ali @ House of Blues tonight. Backed by the Rhythm Roots All-Stars. But you’ve heard The Roots before, you say. You know what live hip-hop sounds like. Ok, yeah yeah. There are three reasons I expect tonight’s show to blow your average Roots show out of the water. 1) In five shows, Brother Ali, one of the most impassioned MCs I’ve ever seen, has only gotten more intense as a performer 2) Ghostface is a reliable and lovable mess onstage, reflecting the casual brilliance of his rhymes and 3) Rakim!!! The godfather. The man that made conscious hip-hop conceivable and, at least on his first two outings, has yet to be surpassed.
- Me’Shell Ndegeocello @ House of Blues tomorrow (Tuesday). From day one, Ndegeocello has proven the futility of trying to label her music. She is a phenomenal funk bassist, an art-rock singer-songwriter and a hip-hop low-end-provider. Her new album (which I haven’t heard yet but is coming up on the listening pile) is entitled The World Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams (Decca). Expect an equally virtuosic band because Me’Shell would demand nothing less.
