Two Chicago bands won both opening slots at this year’s Lollapalooza festival at the Last Band Standing competition at Double Door in Wicker Park. Helicopters (at left), an electro-pop group, won the audience voting portion of the competition, while glam rockers Shockstars (at right) won the celebrity judging round. The band’s were ranked 3rd and 5th, respectively, in online voting heading into last night’s competition.
I stopped in last night and it appeared that Helicopters packed the place with every friend, acquaintance, and family member they had. Every third person was wearing a bumper sticker or t-shirt with the band’s name on it. The celebrity judges, who included Rhymefest and a non-Wentzian member of Fall Out Boy
were ensconced in the upstairs bar, so I’m not surprised that the fuller sound and Adam Ant-style stage presence of Shockstars had an easier time reaching their eyes and ears than Helicopters’ nerdy charm and dance-y pop.
Shockstars will play Saturday morning on the MySpace mainstage at 11:30 while Helicopters will kick things off on Friday at 11:45 on the Citi sidestage (the over/under on the number of times you will overhear someone refer to it as the “Shitty” stage is five).

Shockstars wasn’t even the best CHICAGO based band at this sham of a contest. Aranda and Sirsy were the only two groups competing for the first place prize - too bad that nobody told them the fix was in to get two Chicago bands on the Lolla bill.
Q. Six months after Lollapalooza… what did the lead “singer” of Shockstars say to the lead singer of Aranda?
A. Do you want fries with that?
